So, I went to my local Discount Tire (North Idaho) for a nail in tire issue and also inquired about tire rotations. They indicated that they went through the Rivian training and had the proper jack pucks, but they only do a front to back tire rotation with no crossover since they can only jack up one side of the R1S at a time. Is this standard operating procedure for Discount Tires everywhere?

The nail went in sideways and only penetrated the outer edge of the tread/knobby portion which Discount pulled with no air leakage, so they were very helpful with that issue.

The front to back only is a nationwide standard for Discount Tire. I saw the procedure sheet at one of our DT's. DT states it comes directly from Rivian, which I doubt. We have another DT 2 miles away that will do a standard rotation with all four tires off the ground. Manager dependent, I imagine.

My Discount tire uses four portable jacks with the pucks to lift all four tires at the same time. They’ve always had me pull it into the bay and do the proper setup (mode/suspension) and once it finished adjusting, the lift it up and rotate the tires.

My local discount tire did only front back. However, they said they would do side to side if I requested. They might have to do it in two stages if they only have two jacks , first front and back and then jack up the whole back to do side to side.

But seriously, a discount tire shop only has two floor jacks? WTF!

Nope, mine picks up all four at once. Location at Lake Pleasant Blvd in Peoria. I always do five-tire and cross rotations. This has given me exceptional mileage on ATs that I abuse off road.

It's probably best to do only front to back rotation as this keeps the tires rotating in the same direction.
When you do a cross rotation, tires end up rotating "backwards" which places additional stresses on the tire and could lead to failure.

What’s the proper setup? (Noobie here.)

That was the recommendation decades ago, but no longer.
My Discount Tire here in Boulder moves the fronts from RF to RR and LF to LR but crosses the rears from RR to LR and LR to RF.
There is evidence that reversing direction on the stock Rivian 20's helps minimize tire noise as the tires wear.

Aside from lack of willingness/ability, the only reason to do front-to-back only is if you have directional tires. I don't believe any of the factory tires are. As pointed out above, it's up to each DT location's discretion. But aside from nuances of lifting, there is nothing proprietary about doing tire rotations on the Rivian. All the more reason to own your own set of jack pucks and not restrict your options to just Rivian Service and DT. The shop(s) you approach only need time and willingness, plus information on the nuances of jacking—which you can provide by familiarizing yourself with or presenting info contained within Rivian's Tow Operator Guide; this info is also contained within your Owner Guide. And, if you own a full size spare, that potentially opens up option of jacking only one corner at a time, to rotate that spare in (if mileage on the other four tires are still relatively low).

Tire change procedure is in Tow Operator Guide and your Owner Guide.

This is a solid response. Many of our customers have relationships with smaller local tire servicing centers, which typically have the same ownership and management over a longer period, which makes people feel more comfortable.

Every Rivian owner should have their own set of jack pucks, this especially holds true if you have a road side repair by AAA or some random tow truck company, who absolutely will not have jack pucks.

And if you (general reference) own a Rivian spare tire kit, it includes a puck-like adapter. Just one. So it's only useful for jacking up one corner at a time (and less durable than most if not all aftermarket pucks, because it's only made for limited emergency use).

Good point. Here is what Rivian supplies for those that are unaware, vs a jack puck option.
