Good morning

I am bringing my R1T tomorrow for tint/ PPF / Ceramic coat. I have the 21’ and have taken out the aero inserts.

1). Should I powder coat everything black or leave as is?

the shop said if I might Powder coat the wheels I should hold off on coating wheels.

thoughts?

best.

I think this is purely subjective to your preferences. Do you like black wheels? If yes, powdercoat them :)

I'm choosing not to do it to mine (22") when I receive mine. But I do understand the appeal since the black versions available of the Rivian wheels are outrageously expensive when it is essentially just a powdercoat.

I feel black wheels is trend which is ending. There are minivans out now with factory black wheels. They used to be the trend with sports cars about a decade ago. When family vans/sedans start having them, I'd say the trend is over. :p Again, just my opinion. If you like them, that's great too.

If you never plan on using the inserts, the 21s look good all-black if you prefer that look. But with the inserts in, it's going to feel like a black blob without any variance in color and no yellow brake calipers peeking through. Just something to keep in mind.

Edit: a left-field idea could be to paint the inserts a different color, like dark gray or carbon fiber or something.

Personally, I think black wheels look stupid. I'm not sure why people would pay more for it. I would pay more for not-black wheels. Black wheels also make any damage stand out. Bare metal surrounded by silver isn't so noticeable, bare metal surrounded by black is very noticeable.

But that is just my aesthetic preference and it's not my truck it is yours. If you love the look of black wheels, then you should have them painted/coated black.

One thought is that you might want to wait until the factory finish gets beat up, and then have them coated that way you double the length of time your wheels new.

Im going to powder coat my wheels once I get the truck. I powder coated my wheels on my Rav4 Prime and they look amazing with the vehicle. Also, powderocating only cost me $480, which was much more reasonable than ordering the black wheels Rivian offers

Someone said to be careful of powder coating the AT wheels. They’re forged so you need to coat them with not too much heat or something like that. Probably look it up.

I am considering powder coating because I want black wheels for sure, but I like the design of the "standard" AT wheels better than Rivian's $3500 black wheel option. So I plan to get those and then powder coat them black immediately after delivery.

I have a few questions about the process:
  1. Where do you go for wheel powder coating? Is this typically done at the same detail shops that do tint, PPF, and paint correction?
  2. Approx. how much does powder coating all 4 wheels cost?

I guess I don't understand. Can someone please explain the wanting to powder coat the wheels?
What advantage is there to doing that. I think the factory wheels are quite nice and don't personally see covering them up for what they cost. Or am I missing something?

1) Find a reputable shop, specifically search for powder coating. Most of the good ones only do that.

2) Should be $200 or less per wheel, $150 is a pretty standard going rate.

As mentioned above, BE SURE to ask them about doing forged wheels if you're doing the 20" wheels. It requires special powder & a lower baking temp. Higher/standard temps can compromise the integrity of forged wheels.

It's purely for aesthetics – basically dying/painting the wheels a different color. For example, making the entire wheel black.

I think your truck looks amazing as-is with the inserts out. It would probably look good with black wheels too, but I wouldn’t spend the money when it already looks great.

Also, might the added thickness of the powder coat prevent the inserts from snapping into place?

Just got my wheels powdered coated here in LA area.

I saw this last night, and it made me regret spending the $3500 on my order! Your R1T looks amazing. Are you happy with the shop for the PPF? Still debating if I'm going to go that route, or just ceramic. Your film has ceramic or a top coat built in?

Yes. The XPEL Ultimate Fusion has the ceramic coat built into the film. The handfeel on the vehicle is insanely slick and smooth. American Wrap did a fantastic job. And Tyler has one on order... so he's "in the family".

Hey @jeremysteenblik - one question I've asked a couple of times but no one has answered, but now maybe you can....

As I've looked into powder coating, the few places I've checked out online say the need the rims - not the car. How would one actually do that without a replacement set of wheels? How did your powder-coating vendor handle this? Did you give them the truck and pick it up later wheels all done?

Thanks!
