Use case 1: GPS is telling you to take a exit off the highway, you see the sign, exit in 2 miles. I look at the odometer and now I have an easy way of knowing how close I am to the exit and when I should move over.
2 miles? Start getting over now please.

Ah, I understand why you would like that feature. I don't know of an application that tells you what you would like it to do.

I, on the other hand, have relied on Garmin GPS ever since they started making automotive GPS's. For 30 years, I have had a Garmin on my dash or windshield. This native Rivian system just doesn't tell me enough. Ten highway accidents in the last 10 years and every one of them has been on my Garmin camera and 100 per cent the other drivers fault. It has saved me thousands of $. The camera doesn't lie.
I said the above incorrectly, I ONLY had 4 highway accidents in the last 10 years, not 10.

don’t think it’s at all controversial (or really even debatable) that an odometer on a car should be expected and visible.

Appreciate all the comments as to why someone can get by without one, alternative solutions, age-related shade, etc but lordy this is basic and an easy add.
I think it’s a matter of people enjoy not having a bunch of unnecessary clutter on the driver screen and for a vast majority of owners having an always visible odometer is unnecessary clutter.

Thanks to OTA updates people are starting to expect changes that conform to their edge-use cases under the assumption that everyone wants them, but that frequently isn’t the case. The number of Rivian who still use odometers to count distance while driving is likely incredibly small.

We would very much like a the vehicle odometer on the driver's screen, preferably with tenths shown. That just makes common sense.

Additionally, several trip odometers that are available in one step would also be nice, possibly even one displayed on the driver screen. Our 2020 Silverado HD even has odometers for the trailers used with tow vehicle. This is a very nice feature.

The folks at Rivian who are responsible for setting up the screens need to get out on the street and road driving around, running errands, etc. They will soon realize what's really useful and what isn't.

This is not normal behavior. My music or podcast stops about 1 second after I close my door.
Good to hear, do you use the PAAK or the fob? I wonder if there's a difference in how it reads whether the vehicle should still be in accessory mode? (not sure how to describe that in between stage in an electric vehicle, or if its still called the same) I'll have to see how music/podcasts act in mine when it arrives.

EDIT: Also just now realized I'm slightly highjacking the thread with this discussion, so to bring it back to the original content I think the odometer (or frankly just more information) is always better. If there's unused screen space then lets use it!

I use the Rivian guidance especially on freeways, lane use can be tricky. Never known a freeway error on guidance, or the female voice that directs. Of all the needless things that prevail today in the virtual world, I would actually use a better female voice if "she" existed.

Probably exactly the reason the odometer isn't on the screen, because they don't have the same use cases for it as people who do.

Odometer is an “edge use case” in a machine that travels distance? Um ok.

For me, unnecessary clutter is the display of vehicles in front of me on the driver display, that is useless. I can see those vehicles out the windshield just fine. Let me turn that off and replace it with an odometer value.

Lots of people only use the odometer in their ICE vehicle to check if their mileage exceeds the number on the sticker on their windshield to know they need to get an oil change. Similarly the adage of "you should rotate your tires every X number of miles" is because most people are too lazy to actually measure tread depth regularly, which is the real indicator of when they should get rotated.

I'm definitely not opposed to having more customization options but I understand why Rivian may have decided to not show it. I don't understand why they wouldn't have at least let people put a trip-meter on the display though (as well as the other trip related efficiency data), it's bizarre they chose to hide that the way they did. Personally it's just meant I end up not using it instead of bothering to go digging for it.

Yea, digging around for an OD is bad, that is my very point, but why should we give up the feature when we are so advanced?

Doc's Delorean displayed the time travel data for a machine that travels time! I don't think it's asking too much for Rivian to display the distance, lol.

Edit: Hey Rivian, since Halloween is coming up as well as Back To the Future October 26, can we get an Easter Egg screen that emulates this??????

To quote Blake (from the 18 century!):

"If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern."

I am so grateful to the participants of this forum (and this thread in particular), for the endless entertainment and wisdom shared here. It's making my eighth decade most enjoyable!

Donald, GPS is not available everywhere, not everyone uses the urban location address, sometimes a rural location has things that are not recognized by google. Example, while driving you spot a tree of note, or a stranded bicyclist at a point of no reference to send help to or a tow truck to. Or dirt roads in mountains or actual range of the R1T consumed driving a given real distance in snow mode or such. Man does not live by google alone.
If you need exact specifics or your literal coordinates at any given time are accessible on the main page of your phone app. There should also be mile markers where you’re at. I lived in the middle of no where for 20yrs where everything was dirt roads and adjacent towns had 500 to 1500 people. Never once have I ever needed this ODO to a tenth piece. How often are you going somewhere new in a rural area where you could possibly miss a turn? And when you do miss a turn in the middle of nowhere you sure as **** know you did pretty darn quick lol.

This is a complete non-issue looking for a solution to a problem that truly does not exist.

To help you out with your Rivian locking/unlocking just close out your app when you don’t need it.
