I am struggling figuring out what adapters are necessary.. I have three, but I am sure that is at lease 1 too many...

J1772 to Tesla Charger Adapter
Tesla Supercharger to CCS1 Charging Adapter
80A Tesla to J1772 Charging Adapter

Typically if I am not charging at home I will be charging at my office which is a J1772, if I need to quick charge I would use an EVGo (I am assuming they are some type of CCS combo? but would welcome an education) near my home. I would imagine the Tesla Supercharger is the most beneficial of the bottom two.

I appreciate the help in advance, it has been about 2.5 years since I have had an EV and it seems a lot has changed!

I carry these two:(2)
  • NACS (supercharger) to CCS1 (by Tesla/Rivian)
  • NACS (L2) to J1772 (by Lectron)
This expands my charging options exponentially via Destination and Superchargers.

Typically, you will charge your vehicle one of two ways; level 2 (L2) or level 3 (L3) charging.

Level 2 charging is slower, meant for charging where you usually park your vehicle overnight or during the day. This means work or home for most folks. Level 2 charging uses AC power, and your vehicle can level 2 charge at a maximum of 48 amps. You can see this amperage setting in the Energy app on your center screen, bottom right. There is no benefit to having an adaptor that's rated for more amperage than your vehicle can handle.

Level 3 charging is fast, and commonly called DC fast charging (DCFC) because it uses DC power delivery. This type of charging is for roadtrips or quickly charging your battery in under an hour. Usually these chargers are rated between 50kW and 350kW. Your vehicle has a maximum level 3 charge rate of 216kW, but only when your battery is below 40% usually.

Your vehicle has a CCS port for charging. CCS means Combined Charging System because it, well, combines two different plugs into one. A CCS port has a J1772 port on top for AC charging, and two beefy pins on the bottom for DC charging. Most of us have two adaptors, and only for adapting to Tesla (NACS) chargers.

If you want to fast charge at Tesla Superchargers (level 3), you will need a NACS to CCS adaptor. Lectron and A2Z are two reputable brands that make this adaptor. I have the A2Z and love it.

If you want to charge at Tesla Destination chargers (level 2, usually at hotels or airbnbs), then you will need a NACS to J1772 adaptor. Lots of brands make these, including the two above.

Important safety note: you can NOT use these adaptors interchangeably. The NACS to CCS adaptor cannot be used for level 2 charging, and NACS to J1772 adapters cannot be used for level 3 charging.

Every evGO station will have CCS plugs, yes. CCS is still the standard for all non-Tesla charging infrastructure in the US. All major fast charging networks will have CCS plugs as the primary option. This may change in the coming years as more brands switch over to NACS, but that remains to be seen in practice.

J1772 to Tesla Charger Adapter
...
80A Tesla to J1772 Charging Adapter
I'm assuming the first one here is for adapting from J1772 to NACS, which would not work on your vehicle. This is for charging Teslas on J1772 chargers like ChargePoint.

The second seems to be a NACS to J1772 adaptor. This is useful for charging your Rivian from Tesla Destination chargers, or a friend's Tesla-specific home charger.

This seems to be a NACS to CCS adaptor. You can use this at Tesla Supercharger stations that support charging CCS vehicles. Use the Tesla or Rivian apps to see which Tesla Superchargers are available for charging your vehicle, as not all of them are currently enabled.

You need two adapters if your coming from a Tesla. I highly recommend the A2Z Typhoon pro and combine that with the A2Z Stellar (you save by buying them together). Also, my website I have a 10% savings code.

1) The Typhoon adapter will allow you to supercharge at compatible Tesla supercharging stations. See my video below on how to find them.

2) The Stellar adapter will allow you to charge at Tesla Wall connectors and Destination chargers. It has a built in lock as well for when your using public destination chargers at hotels etc.

You will need the AC Level 2 Stellar adapter to use a Tesla Destination charger commonly found in hotels, Airbnb, shopping centers and parking lots with your Rivian.

You will need the DC Level 3 Typhoon Pro adapter to charge your Rivian at eligible Tesla Superchargers.

You can bundle the A2Z Stellar AC Level 2 Tesla to J-1772 adapter for $68 additional after discount by using the drop down on the Level 3 Typhoon Pro adapter page to get both adapters.

Feel free to use the below links or forum discount code "RIV" to save on products sold on A2Z website and get free shipping.

TYPHOON PRO | NACS DC CHARGERS to CCS1 Adapter | 500A | 1000V | DC | 12 Months Warranty

Tesla To J1772 adapter (Tesla Destination Charger for Hotels / Shopping centers) | Up to 80A | 20kW | 12 Months Warranty

I assume the Typhoon adapter is in lieu of the Tesla supercharger adapter Rivian is (allegedly) providing?

Sorry, yes, thank you, your response was helpful. Someone else on the thread recommended the purchase of two others.... Crazy!
They were recommending equivalent products to what you already have, yes. Some folks prefer A2Z over Lectron (myself included). We don't know what NACS to CCS adaptor you have, so lots of folks will recommend one or the other.

Yes, one too many. There's no need to carry a J1772 to Tesla adapter. You only need one of those if you're driving a Tesla.

I strongly suspect this is incorrect. AFAIK, Rivian has committed to providing an adapter to all customers until they change to NACS charging ports, something that is a ways off.

In my considerable experience with Rivian, I have found that you often can't rely on the information provided by the advisors, guides or any other company customer service representative. I would continue to check with Rivian Customer Support and push them on this; refer to the excerpt from Rivian communication below.

At my 4 June delivery, I was told that I didn't need to do anythng and that the adapter would just be delivered at some point in the future. That turned out to be wrong, and after some chatting with CS, I eventually was sent the same opt-in email to respond to that every other Rivian owner got. Whether or not my pestering of CS had anything to do with the email is debateable (it probably didn't) but the point is the information from the reps was wrong. Rivian is providing adapters in the order of delivery, so those of us with later deliveries will wait longer. But they are providing them to everyone who owns a Rivian.

Get in touch with Customer Service and don't take no for an answer, unless they are willing to point to a something in writing that backs up what they're saying. As Reagan said, "Trust, but verify."

This is from an earlier communciation by Rivian, but I don't think anything has changed:
How do I get a Rivian-approved NACS DC adapter?

We’re offering a free NACS DC adapter to all Rivian owners in the US and Canada to enable charging at over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America.

We’ll email all existing Rivian owners in early April with instructions on how to opt-in to receive an adapter*. Once you’ve confirmed your interest, we’ll follow up to confirm your mailing address when your adapter is ready to be shipped.

Adapters will begin shipping in April, and we’ll prioritize our longest-standing owners for earliest fulfillment.

*For those taking delivery after in April and beyond, we’ll contact you separately about getting your adapter."
