Configuration: 08/2021 R1S Adventure Limestone Ocean Coast 22" Sport Bright
Last Estimate: October–December 2023
Test Drive: 6/15/2023, was immediately offered one after I moved back to CA from WA, rebooked a few times
Shop Access: 6/22/2023, just missed quarter end so options were very limited
Confirmed: 7/5/2023, inventory opened up, I believe Costa Mesa SC was seeing the same inventory as the factory
Picked Up: 8/2/2023

About two years since I ordered. Not long compared to the OG folks. My delivery specialist was Drew (sp?) who also happened to be our First Mile host a few months back. Terrific guy as always. Never felt rushed and the entire time I was inspecting the vehicle, he was giving me the DL about the older problems he's seen that have already been addressed (that were still on my inspection checklist) or we talked about other vehicles such as the Land Cruiser announcement from last night.

Car had 14 miles on it and I put another 14 for the commute home. Haven't had a chance to take it out again but hoping to put some more miles on it tomorrow to suss out any drivability or interior issues.

Regarding exterior issues, for a 149## build, I was hoping for minimal issues and I think in general I got pretty lucky? Though annoyingly there is a panel with a small chip and scrapes along the edges that I'll want corrected before I get PPF applied. I assume the appointment will be somewhat far out since it doesn't impact function or drivability which means I'll be driving around for a while w/o PPF.

Curious to hear from the community which of the items I noted below I should actually follow up on and which I shouldn't bother with? I'm assuming #1 the chipped/scraped panel and possibly #7 if my tailgate sits too far from the body are probably the most important ones? Hopefully this also gives others picking up soon some areas to focus on.

Update: Scheduled service for 10/6 (earliest availability across Costa Mesa and El Segundo).

PPF installer I’m going with is going to work with me on the existing paint chip, getting angsty driving around without and paint protection. Will share vids/outcome of the install!

Issues cataloged during pickup or within the week after:
  1. Chip, scrapes along the edge of body panel adjacent to charge port. Someone tried to fix this with a paint pen, looks terrible.

  2. Scrape along glossy black trim on top of driver side rear door.

You should get 3 and 4 sorted too. They had seem to be doing better with panel alignment, especially around the charge port so yours seems to be an unusually poor one for being two years into manufacture.

Regarding the small paint chip issue, when we took delivery of our R1T at the factory in December it had a paint defect on the edge of the hood. Since we were driving back to Virginia, they told us to just put in a ticket. When we got back to VA we had two more small paint chips on the hood from the drive.

Since everything was on the hood, Rivian offered to have the hood repaired, but the wait was going to be over two months. We didn't want to wait that long on PPF. We ended up having Rivian send us a paint pen and our PPF/Detailer applied the paint in their shop before the PPF. You can't tell there was ever an issue. Since the original defect was on an edge, the touch up paint worked well and our PPF is edge wrapped, so it's protected. The front chips disappeared with the touch up paint and PPF.

Rivian is quick to jump to a total repaint and it's much less disruptive to just fix with touch up if possible.

We have a service appointment in Sept. because in the heat our passenger front door started rubbing on the front panel and we have some pretty bad chipped paint. Rivian's suggested solution is to paint the door. We're going to see if they'll touch up and PPF wrap the edge instead. (We only did PPF on the front third, door sills and the tailgate)

#12 looks like they repainted that area, isn’t that your B pillar logo with tape over it? (Marked in black)

Ughh….this is exactly why the service centers are so backed up. It’s impossible to know from the forums, but it seems that a very high number of delivered vehicles need some kind of repair in the first few months. They must have a lot of pressure (? stock valuation) to push these vehicles out in such poor condition. I don’t think it’s good for customer sentiment, but I get the sense their fighting for their lives and perhaps this strategy helps the bottom line. I was hoping by now we would start seeing less of these posts….they apparently have a long way to go.

Wow that tailgate is way off! I had all the above and more on my R1S. That indention on the door I didn’t catch before but I have that as well. I wonder how they would address that. If it’s a full repaint of the door I’m just going to leave it alone.

It's unfair to the service centers. But from corporate's perspective, a necessary evil to pad their numbers. Hiring is hard all around, I don't think it's a Rivian-specific problem but exacerbated by Rivian standing everything from the ground up.

With bodywork that the service center isn't equipped to handle and needs to farm out to a nearby independent body shop, they are at the mercy of whatever shop is being tapped.

Of the issues I've recorded, I'm not sure which to actually pursue given all the horror stories I'm hearing, especially from my local service center. I might even push off the appointment altogether but just assume things will get worse until the Inland Empire SC opens and takes the pressure off Costa Mesa and El Segundo.

Dropped off my R1S two Fridays ago and picked it up today. I was apprehensive given some of the horror stories I heard which led to this status check thread. Happy to report that the service visit was a positive experience (shoutout to all the folks at the Costa Mesa SC).

They estimated about half a week to a full week for the work but ended up taking a few more days than that. I didn't mind as the loaner that Enterprise gave me was a brand-new Model X (picked up with 60 miles, returned it with about 540 miles on the odometer).

Had to wait a bit at drop-off so I was able to walk the lot and gauge some of the trim / panel issues present on other vehicles. I told the service personnel to just be straight up with me regarding what wasn't worth pursuing so right off the bat we crossed off almost half of the items as won't do.

After dropping off the R1S on Friday, it didn't get moved into a service bay until Tuesday (Monday being a holiday), Rivian could've just saved four days of rentals by just having me drop off on Tuesday? From there at various times I saw that the liftgate was open and the suspension was set to All-Terrain, presumably for the liftgate and PDR fixes.

Annoyingly, the paint issue requires a separate visit since the two body shops the Costa Mesa SC works with were booked out for weeks. They could have aligned my appointment with the body shop but I assume they wanted to verify the issue first or hope I would just waive it. I also incorrectly assumed they would go ahead and make the appointment but I only realized when I picked up today that I had to file another service appointment with Rivian to get that sorted out. Appointments are booked out until January so TBD.

1) Front fascia chipRequires separate visit
2) Scrape along glossy black trimPaint pen
3) Panel alignment issuesPunt, see 1) Front fascia chip, assume there will be an opportunity to fix the panel alignment when reattaching after paint fixes
4) Trim alignment issuesNot worth addressing
5) Small dent inside passenger rear doorNot worth addressing
6) Scrapes along front lower plastic bumperReplaced
7) Tailgate sits far away from bodyAddressed perfectly (also doesn't make any sound when opening now)
8) Rough unfinished metal / paintwork in trunk areaNot worth addressing
9) Loose rubber trim sealNot worth addressing
10) Passenger rear door juts outAddressed perfectly
11) Small dent on driver side rear fenderAddressed perfectly
12) Indentation line down passenger rear doorNot worth addressing
1) Rear passenger door handle misalignedAttempted fix, looks the same as before
2) Passenger front window gasket pinchedNot worth addressing
3) Mobile app stuck on "Close Windows"Addressed perfectly

Happy to hear you’re happy with the repairs. I’m surprised they didn’t replace the door gasket that was coming off. Mine was replaced. They also replaced my driver door pinched window gasket. My trim alignment issues were all addressed but two have now presented themselves and I go back in for that and two other items in mid December.

The "rough metal work at tailgate" is body adhesive to connect the panels for no squeak.

Wow--thanks for the pix. That seems like alot of dings, etc. Seems like some of the misalignments are result of folks on the assembly line having a bad day. Are the dings part of transporting to you? Just seems ridiculous.

Hah, wonder if it's just gonna be rented by Rivian owners back to back. An acquaintance brought his R1S in the day before you and passed on the X since he already has one and was interested in trying out other cars so he ended up with the Volvo XC40 Recharge.
