trade-in caution

13 weeks and counting since delivery/trade-in. Checked the WA DOL (department of licensing) site today to see if I had a plate on the way. That's covered in other posts/threads. I noted that the car I traded-in was still registered to me. This is not my first trade-in. In all others, the dealer took care of the paperwork and no hassle on my part. In this case, I went ahead with a process that I had to pay for to get the vehicle out of my name. I have no idea what has happened to it in the meantime...all the more reason to want my name off of it. Reached out to my guide and will have a conversation about this.

If you have or are going to do a trade-in, see if you can check on or report the sale yourself. Don't rely on Rivian for this.

Still love the truck, of course.

I see this as a non-issue. I still have cars from the 90's associated to me in the Oregon DMV portal. Oregon DMV states that the vehicle will remain in my portal until some registers it in Oregon. My guess is they were registered out of state. Not sure if Washington handles things similarly.

From the WA DOL site:

<<Filing will protect you from being held liable for towing charges or civil and criminal liabilities incurred by the new owner. The new owner must transfer the ownership into their name.>>

Again, having traded in vehicles in WA before, I have never needed to file the sale report; the dealer did that. My recollection is that I was told when doing the Rivian paperwork that they would report the sale...

Btw, out of curiosity, how generous was the trade in value? I just got an obscene amount from Carmax for the vehicle my R1T will replace.

Some states will zing you if your insurance lapses before they transfer it too. I had a car that an insurance company took possession of after a wreck only to find years later that the Louisiana had put a flag on the license of each person on the title because they claimed it didn't have insurance on it. Because of the length of time involved, it took a lot of doing to prove to the state that it had insurance on it at the time the insurance company took possession. Hopefully Rivian gets this working more smoothly soon.

Had the same thing happen to me in Louisiana on my Tesla trade in, but the DOT was able to remove the flag on my license in about 10 minutes.
