Trade in (Rivian Vs Carvana)

I purchased R1S from Rivian Shop and selected the option of Trade in and my car value is 1000 less than Carvana's offer. I am based out of NC which has 3 % of sales tax . What is the downside of selling my vehicle with Carvana apart from saving on sales tax on the difference between the purchase price and the value of your trade-in.

If the savings on taxes is not significant enough then I guess the only downside would be convenience. Trading in with Rivian was very easy. I drove it to the service center on delivery day and gave it a goodbye hug before hopping in it's replacement.

Here in CO the sales tax is like 8% where I live so it was definitely a factor.

We have used Carvana 3 times, it was pretty easy, but for 1k I'd take the Rivian route

Also NC - yes, lower tax benefit on trade, but that also helps us buy more toys more often .

Take the best offer account for the tax benefit on trade to Rivian...and then decide how much convenience is worth.

If you for some reason decide to take advantage of Rivian's 7-day return policy, you can get your trade-in vehicle back if you go with Rivian. If you sell it to Carvana (which I've used 2X with zero issues) it's their vehicle once you sign the title over.. so you may be left car-less if you return the Rivian.

Slightly O/T from OP's post... I'm awaiting delivery myself ATM and my guide advised that I have to get to the nearest service center to take delivery and they are unable to deliver to my home. This would mean I need to travel to Brooklyn, NY which is over 5 hours away by car-- I'll need to fly there, since I'm not trading in my vehicle to Rivian.

I decided to sell my trade locally to another dealer rather than trade in to Rivian. Made trade in deal with local dealer and got a check the same day. over $2k more than Rivian was offering... which makes sense since they will likely send it to auction and sell to another dealer who will sell it.

FWIW, I didn't see what Rivian would offer but I did try the local Audi dealer, CarMax, and Carvana and both the dealer and Carvana low-balled me below the Kelly Blue Book range (Carvana the lowest by far) while Carmax came in the middle of the range.

I'm trading an A7, which breaks my heart in a lot of ways because I love that car - but it's time, and I found that Rivian was giving me within a couple hundred of what Carvana would and more than I would get from Audi or Carmax.

I chose to sell mine person-to-person because I got much more for it than any trade-in would offer me. It's more work, but I made a lot more money off of it in the end. I literally just posted it on FB Marketplace and got a good offer from someone who genuinely wanted and needed my old car.
