So this morning started a 110 mile trip in my G1 Quad truck. 45% SOC, min min 10% SOC at arrival, battery temperature 23F, motor temps in 30F range. Nav calculated 1x 14 min stop at Tesla supercharger about 1h away. As soon as I hit "go", battery preconditioning message came on and with 1-2 min of driving motor temps skyrocketed! I've never seen this before, only have fast charged a handful of times, never in this cold ambient temps. I'm assuming it was trying to heat up the battery but I was uncomfortable with 200sF as I have never ever reached this high temps.
Is this normal?

I think it's normal, especially for battery preconditioning. It's pulling motor heat to warm the battery.

Normal, Rivian uses the waste heat from running the motors inefficiently to heat the battery.

Your Rivian is behaving normally*

* The term "normal" applies to the motor temps only and not any other parts or processes, nor is intended to evaluate the mental health of the driver.

As others have said, this is normal behavior. While heating or even preconditioning on my 2023 Quad, I've seen those numbers up much higher, and the infographic on the motors will turn orange -- I forget the specific temp but it was was over 200 and almost up to the hot mark on that gauge. Although this may be alarming, this is what the truck is designed to do and so long as it doesn't throw a code in the process you're all good.

Others already mentioned it, but it's warming the battery with waste heat from driving the motors inefficiently. They keep changing the UI, but I believe the blue snowflake on the battery temp also indicates it's warming the battery...it may also show in the driver display on the bottom right of the power-arc (IIRC).

The little red tick mark on the temperature gauge indicates the max "normal" temperature. You are still far from that. Additionally, the meter will turn orange when the temperature gets higher, and then red when it gets higher still.

How hot does your ICE engine get? And what temp is a cause for concern with your ICE engine? You probably don't know, and don't even think about it until you get a warning light. You can do the same thing with your EV - if you're curious, there are numbers there, but if it's a problem you will get a notice on the driver's screen.

Makes sense in the red mark.

I am very concerned with ICE engine temps, I usually run around 200-210F oil on hot summer day before I flip the fan on in my track car...

I was recently at a Tesla supercharger and the outside temp was 32F. Battery temp was a little more than that. I plugged in and had a 25kw/h charge, but the quad motor temps were going crazy- to the point the bars turned yellow when they went over the max temp line. I called support, they said I’d see some crazy things but in no way told me what was going on.

I stopped charging and unplugged, temps went back down. Plugged back in and they shot up, but then the longer they were hot the faster the supercharger went. Battery got up to about 90F and was getting 135kw/h.

this was a long winded way to say I agree with everyone else. :)

This happened to me on a road trip, temps climbed to 275 and beyond. Called service and was told start worrying if temp exceeds 304f. Motors were warming the batteries, and was 'normal'. I haven't seen it since. This was when the detailed screen showing bat & motor temps was new, in 2023.

I had this happen when my T was new in early 23. 30f weather on road trip, preconditioning made the motors spike from 130f to 295f. Called and was told that was normal, but if it went over 305f to be concerned and call back. The computers cause the motors to operate inefficiently in order to heat the batteries.
