For context: I am an R1 owner since 8/22/22, put my R2 deposit in within the first 30 minutes on March 7, 2024, and live about 70 miles from a SC. I also opted in for the Launch Edition.
I made my reservation on March 14; received notice today that my order will be taken in Oct-Nov., with a projected 4-6 week delivery. Does that only apply if I'm ordering a Performace R2? I'm wanting a light interior and dual wheels associated with a Premium level...does that put me into a much later date for delivery?

The math ain’t mathing. They are only supposed to make 20k R2s this year. Yet the latest date seen is early 27 for people who just reserved? I reserved in Feb 26 and got an sept-oct 26. I figured at least mid to late 27.
Remember, the date they say you will receive the INVITE is not the date you will receive your vehicle. The production target has little to do with how they are sending out the invites. Even if you get your invite today that doesn't mean you can order today - the configuration you want might not available until next year. There is no way they could know at this point in time exactly what everyone intends to order - some people are waiting for a "tri-motor" which hasn't even been announced yet, or for a Red Canyon color which was never promised, etc. The way to find out is to start opening up the invites and see who is ready to take what they have right now vs wait for a different configuration.

Allowing everyone to just place an order now would be a giant cluster. But opening up a lot of invites from a broad spectrum of reservations gives Rivian a way to figure out what the demand for the different models is.

The ramp has just started and the actual deliveries will be heavily weighted towards the end of the year. There are going to be huge numbers shipped in late 2026 and early 2027, and they have to lay the groundwork now for getting those customers invited and their orders placed.

I wish they had told us that of course I would’ve checked yes interested in launch
If you lie and say you want the Launch instead of the Performance that you configured, that might get you an invite sooner BUT you still won't be able to order that Performance you want, or any other non-Launch until those configurations become available.

In short, it's not going to improve your delivery date, it's just going to add a lot of "noise" to the invite process which will make Rivian's projections that much more difficult. So do us all a favor and configure your favorite exactly how you want it.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
I put my reservation in on November 11th, 2025 and I can expect my R2 order invite in December 2026-February 2027. Once I place my order I can expect to take delivery within 4-8 weeks for most configurations. So a 17-23 month wait from the time I placed the reservation (or 10-16 months from now).

I have questions:

  • I uploaded my current lease, so does this mean they’re willing to do a buyout/trade-in? Otherwise why did they ask people to upload their leases?

  • What do they mean by most configurations? The Performance is out now and the Premium is out at the end of 2026, but the Standard Long-Range (345 miles) isn’t out until Spring of 2027 and the $45K Standard (270 miles) isn’t out until Summer of 2027.

Apparently if you have more than one R2 reservation made at the exact same time (minute zero, day one). The second reservation gets booted to the back of the line. Got the order in for the first. The second reservation is now showing DEC-FEB. They must be trying to prevent flips or something. In our case we actually planned on ordering both, but with this timeline, that might change the plans for the second.

Really wish RIvian was more straight forward about this process. Orders should just go out in the order that they were received.

Reservation placed on March 7, 2024 with an invitation to order in Dec 2026 - February 2027.

I believe the invitation is placed so far out due to the preferences I selected.

I clicked Not Really to the R2 Performance as I'm interested in the R2 with Lidar.

The reservation was made after my test drive on June 24th, 2026. Not a previous Rivian owner, and my current lease is ending in August. Got extremely lucky, but think having an ending lease bumped me up.

Not a Rivian
Well, California EV tax credit/P.O.S. rebate goes into effect TOMORROW so once those funds are depleted they are gone for now..

although, I doubt even all these buyers would A) qualify or B) would saturate the 135M allocated ;-)
I wonder how they prove it's first time EV buyers

Probably right.

But some posters have order windows as late as February 2027, and they are still promised a Launch Edition. So if the production line switches to RAP1/LIDAR at the end of 2026 as was previously announced, it seems possible that Launch Editions afterwards will have the new hardware (or they run two production lines/variants simultaneously?).

Not sure if there are any newer announcements for the RAP1/LIDAR timing, but as of late last year they said "Our Gen 3 Autonomy hardware including ACM3 and LiDAR is currently undergoing validation and we expect it to ship on R2 models starting at the end of 2026."

But If RAP1/LIDAR is delayed until next June, it would make sense that all Launch Editions will end in early 2027, prior to the new hardware.
Logistically it makes sense to not overlap as the production lines would get more complex. Which likely means LiDAR/RAP will not be available until March 2027 at the earliest.
