Vehicle Location - App FAIL

I had a very disappointing situation over the weekend. My 2025 R1T was towed and the Location feature on the Rivan app did not update with the current location. It just showed where I had originally parked. I was able to wake the truck and even view the Live cam but the location never updated. I had no idea where my truck had been taken or if it had been stolen. Luckily there was a bystander that told me the company name that was on the tow truck. $350 later I'm back in the truck and using navigation to get home. It took another minute or so to have the location finally update on the truck's navigation. I also would have expected the Gear Guard to record an event since the truck was moving without being driven but there was nothing recorded.

This has been my experience with the app (iOS) since at least last summer. I’ve been able to get it to work/update by closing the app and then reopening.

I would be freaking out about this experience. How long have you had your rig?

Honestly, glitches in car location happen to all mobile and auto OS’s. Once in a while, location doesn’t update. Sometimes cell signal play a role.

If it’s just a one-off, then it’s kinda the norm. If it’s consistent, that’s different.

Happens to me all the time. Sometimes almost a day delay till location corrects.

Recently had random location probs on a 1 year old 2025 Gen 2 R1S - the service center confirmed probs and replaced a wireless module (although I’m unclear what they replaced)

Have my rig vanish would give me nightmares for years. Keep an eye on your app. Try force killing it etc if it doesn't work.

I can't say I've ever had the location fail (I don't know that I've ever really checked it) BUT I can say that every time I've tried using the app for something like turning on the HVAC, venting windows, etc., it works less than half the time. I wouldn't be surprised if the location similarly didn't work well.

Gen1, never had problems. It even updates realtime. Having said that, towing could change things. Car does not expect to be moved while in park, so it may not update location.

This can sometimes occur because of the software is trying to be smart/efficient. Most of the time (towing being the exception) if your vehicle doesn't DRIVE somewhere, the location doesn't change. So if it's been "parked" the whole time, GPS may update less frequently

Nearly 100% of the time app location is wrong. Usually shows place I parked before, not current. A force close of the app and restart always sets it right. The truck seemingly always gets it right as Gear Guard will be active and acquire videos even the the app says its at home (and Gear Guard off at home).

I’ve been finding that the app is less reliable now than it was a year ago. Looks like no issue from the R1’s themselves (we have both gens) but potentially some caching at the back end - back in 23-24 the app was significantly more ’real time’ than say apples find my. Now id say around a couple of times a month the app can be anywhere from several minutes to around an hour or two out of date; what’s weird is this is mostly but not always fixed by restarting the app - making me suspect that some caching issue is likely occurring at some point in the flow. This is 100% not a GPS lock issue, or one of a comms link between the R1 and Rivian’s cloud: the R1 will display that it’s driving, the correct SoC etc - but also that it’s at home, when in reality it’s around 20 mins down a freeway, or in another car park somewhere. ABRP also shows the same, but then when the location updates it also looks to backfill data as well- as suddenly the drive shows up in ABRPS historical data. My theory is that they are likely routing different vins to different instances of their infrastructure; and some of them are a bit flaky. Has never caused enough of an issue to cause be to raise a ticket, as I hope they have their own synthetics or canaries that help report to them quirks in the platform - the biggest annoyance for me so far is that now I have to use apples Find My to ensure I stop watching crap on YouTube and get the dishwasher emptied before the wife gets back - as the Rivian app sometimes says she never left.
