What do we think a new tailgate costs?

I'm so pissed, had the tailgate down and backing up at a busy transfer station dumping some construction debris and did not see a chain post and did a number on my tailgate. Dented and punched a hole. Only pray that the hinges and mounting points are not tweaked since the truck has so much torque.

Will go to the closest Rivian authorized repair center and brace myself. Anybody have experience with a tailgate replacement? Cost and lead time? I have to assume that they will replace and not repair. Also - does anyone know whether you can drive without a tailgate? It's tweaked enough that it rubs against the bumper if I open it. Would be nice to get it off and drive it like that until a new tailgate is supplied and painted.

There's been enough wrecked Rivians, you might be able to find a blue replacement in pristine condition out there for less than going through the SC.

looks like quite a whack. I'd check for frame damage since you obviously had enough energy to bend the tailgate at the point where it attaches to the hinges.

I just purchased a new tailgate for $1,129.19 from a preferred Rivian repair location( you have to go through them to order it).
I am taking it elsewhere for the actual paining and repair.
BTW, yes you can drive without a tailgate, just push in the locks on both sides so the truck so it thinks the tailgate is closed and the sensors work normally.

Seems like a reasonable cost compared to what frame damage entails. Any chance you can post the part number from the service ticket?

I will update if they provided one when I pick up the new tailgate.

i got rear ended and the driver at fault paid $5800 for my new tailgate and bumper. Took 3 weeks to get my truck back. I

You must go through a Rivian Certified Collison Center, you can’t order directly from the service center.

Bummer, sorry that happened to you. Another reason they need to hurry up and get the functionality to switch camera to the rear cab one when the tail gate is down.

I thought the same thing when I read the description of what happened. Entirely avoidable and I think it is common/reasonable to want to back up with the tailgate down.

Rear ended 6/2/23. Estimate the same day. Took the truck in 6/12. Other parties inspector came out at the end of the week. Parts have been ordered. Have yet to arrive. I live in Los Angeles. Note: body shop said that the truck will have to be towed to Rivian in El Segundo to be recalibrated. And said the sensors, once disconnected, will not work until the recalibration. Rental car is a 4Runner. I hate it.

Yeah you are completely blind with the tailgate down and those tiny sideview mirrors. Come to think of it, does the rear proximity warning system work with the tailgate down? I can't really remember if I got a warning from that either. I also find it funny to read in various places that you should never drive with your tailgate down. I have owned like 8 different pickup trucks over the years and have always had occasion to drive with the gate down. You can't tell a pickup truck owner that with a straight face, especially when the bed size is pretty limited to start with.
