Got up early this past Sunday to wash our R1S and noticed a 2" crease in the middle of our center lightbar. Not even a crack, just a crease that looks like the lense is melted. After closer inspection with sunlight reflecting, you can see that a heavy object pushed into it and caused this damage, without touching the panel below it or the hood. Thankfully I already have a replacement sitting in the garage and I'll switch it out when I get a chance.

With that said, I'm wondering what the motion camera is actually programmed to record? I went back into the recorded motion events and may have found the vehicle (Overland AF Jeep Renegade) that backed into our car, but of course the recording starts too late. All the videos I had with front camera initiated events, start with the driver getting out of their vehicle or someone walking past our R1 from front to back. Rarely does the motion even get triggered by another car that is backing toward our vehicle. Since the center screen uses these cameras to differentiate between people and cars in traffic, I'm sure it does the same thing when deciding to record a video or motion event. Did Rivian exclude vehicle initiated motion events on purpose? That would explain why so many people complain that Gary never records their R1 getting damaged in parking lots.

For me, the investigation is over, because the damage is pretty minor and I already have a free-99 replacement part in my garage... but does Rivian need to change the parameters or at least allow some kind of sensativity adjustment so we can decide how many videos we get?

Great Qs, what's your Rivian employed neighbor say?

He said... "I'll help you change out the light bar"...

He doesn't know, but said he would ask the software team. Sometimes it takes a while for Gary to get back to him.

It's the least he could do for backing into you.

IIRC, they decreased the number of wake events, or increased the threshold of pixel changes required to trigger a recording to minimize VD.

Mine was backed into, no record. When I talked to them, they said it was configured to identify people, not cars. That made me angry, I feel like we should be able to set sensitivity ourselves if we're concerned about wake events.

After reading about all the non recordings, then experiencing the same thing with our R1S, I came to that same conclusion. Glad you at least verified it so maybe someone can bring it up to the software team. Not sure if they did this to save space in the internal memory, by reducing the overall amount of videos, but at the very least it should record contact.

It has patent pending taco sensing technology that knows if you are approaching with takeout. That's all.
