I'm at a loss. I'm trying add a small holder (think a phone mount) to this vinyl (?) material on the bottom dash, and NOTHING sticks to it. I've tried two types of 3M VHB, command strips, adhesive-backed velcro, nothing works. Surface is prepped and cleaned thoroughly with rubbing alcohol. It just seems like everything peels right off.

Have you tried alien tape? That stuff sticks to almost anything though not sure how long it holds in that position with the temperature fluctuations in a car.

Thanks, I'll give alien tape a try. It seems I may really need to deep clean/scrub to deal with the release agents and plasticizers in the panel....

It's normal car plastic. A phone mount in a hanging position like that is going to have a huge amount of leverage and I would expect nothing to stick. Start drilling.

Also phone mount UNDER the dash....???

I have a 12V power distribution hub attached to mine via 3M Velcro command strips. It has hung there for going on 3 years without failing.

I also tried (and failed) to mount an arm down there in the past. As @SwampNut noted, the leverage of the arm is going to be hard to overcome with an adhesive.

The other thing I wanted to point out before you get too committed to this idea (and start drilling) is that (at least for where I sit in the truck) a screen located down low reflected into the rear glass of the R1T at night and was very distracting. It was bad enough that it caused me to abandon my search for an adhesive that would work down there.

It's not actually for a phone, but it is for part of a phone holder, and the leverage point is fair. I don't need to see the screen, it just has to be out of the way but easily reachable.

I was in the same boat as you, trying to mount my phone under the main screen because any other place had a pretty obstructive view (mostly due my driving position and height) - so I started down this path :: https://www.evbase.com/products/evb...t-holder-rivian-r1t-r1s-2022-2023-accessories

What caught my eye was the 1 pic in the reviews that shows it mounted exactly where I wanted - however upon installation, the phone didn't last more than 30ft down the road before plopping right off - and being a lease I didn't want to use anything that could potentially damage the dash material - 3M and other less permanent solutions all failed miserably due to the weight.

What I ended up doing was taking the evbase phone mount apart - and using just the magnetic piece, then found this 3d print which hooks into the bottom part of the vent :: https://www.printables.com/model/761896-rivian-sunglasses-vent-hook-new-visor-clip

I attached the evbase part to the 3d print using a zip tie, and honestly its been very stable and a great height for what I need - here are a few pics for reference, let me know if you have any questions

That EVbase mount is a common Chinese item available from Amazon, eBay, Ali, etc. I tried it for a phone mount in my Tesla many years ago, it was ok. I'm prissy about mounts and it was just slightly wobbly for my taste. I think it would be fine for the mic mount as discussed here.

Oh I love it! I should have checked for some kind of existing holder, I just measured the vent and am printing out a test clip to fit:

I've got a couple of those, doing the original hook duty. They are good, I tweaked the exact sizing to be just right (tiny amount), and adding fuzzy skin makes them have a great friction fit. I used a fairly small fuzzy skin size.

That's exactly what I"m thinking. I have some thin adhesive-backed velvet cloth that I use for these purposes, might just do the trick.

I think I have solution. At first I didn't want to 3D-print a clip because it seemed like a really irregularly-shaped part. But based on the design @rcz22 provided, I went through a few iterations and came up with something that fits snugly, and I hope securely:

It stays put, I can move it freely from one side to the other, and it doesn't block airflow or the mechanical vents from moving.

Thanks all!

Slightly (very?) off-topic: I have the exact same cupholder/Kleenex setup in my truck. It's perfect! 😆

Back on topic, depending on frequency of use & whether or not you already have a phone there, I'd look into a mount like this that clips in between the screen and steering wheel. You can likely fashion something without the "raise" so it just hangs out there below dash-level. Just an idea...
