I have some scratches on the interior dash wood trim. Anyone know what to use to clean and minimize the scratches?

Refinishing wood is an art and science in itself. There's no quick answer, and a how-to involves a lot. Generally you'd have to use a progression of different levels of sandpaper. It's super easy to make it worse, and without a test piece to practice on, that seems likely. I've got a very thorough woodworking shop at home, and I'd find this a bit challenging since there's no going back, and no way to practice.

Also, that wood veneer is thin and shaped and it's going to be really easy to make things worse. What about one of those wood filler crayon things?

Which color? Pics of scratches might help the forum assess the situation. Any kind of sanding on this open-pore wood is only going to make the situation worse.

Hey there! Sorry to hear about your wood trim. There have been several threads on this here and elsewhere. Cleaning/Protecting IMO is probably not necessary. As others have said if you have scratches applying products could make it worse.

The only solution I could think of is trying to match up the stain. The only problem with this is that most places (like benjamin moore for example) will require that you take the piece of wood into them for matching which is not possible in this case. The finish on the wood is different between my wife's R1S and my R1T.

Its a very thin wood veneer glued to plastic. If you do attempt to repair it make sure you have budgeted to replace it if your not happy with the result. If its minor I would let it go.

For cleaning I would recommend a clean cloth dampened with distilled water. This is just my opinion and others may have better/different advice.

I think Rivian recommends this stuff from Dr. Beasley for cleaning and maintenance. I have not tried it. I would try it on something other than my vehicle first. If that wasn't possible I'd try it on a passenger door in a spot as discrete as possible.

I second the crayon suggestion. Years ago, I had a Model 3 and bought a cover for the wood on the dash. When I removed it, it stripped away bits of the wood. I bought a pack of the wood color crayons and by taking a little time and layering a few different colors, I was able to make the damaged bits almost disappear.

I would go for the ones that are actually like wax crayons as opposed to the ones that are like felt tipped pens.

I’ve found success using the Beasley cleaner letting dry fully , matched color wax crayon … little lighter than the wood on scratches buffed in after
then Howard Beeswax Conditioner
It goes on w a bit of sheen but in a day soaks in
You’ll need a second wipe off with clean cloth on adjacent finishes unless your fingers are very adept !
Been doing this routine last 2 yrs on R1T looks brand new

A friend was so excited to see my rivian he got in and within 3 seconds he said “oh is this wood?” While scratching his fingers cross grain. Anyways he’s no longer a friend. And I have to figure out how to repair. At least he didn’t write his name.
