When does the model year officially shift to 2023?

By now most manufacturers are selling new 2023 models. My R1T set to be delivered later this month is still a 2022. I'm aware that 2022's can be sold in 2023 but in most cases the most manufacturers usually switches to production builds of the next model year 3-6 months prior to the next year. So say Ford, I believe they started building 2023 models in the fall of this year or earlier. Heck, some sell next year's model in the fall as well.

I know Tesla does things a little different. I'm just curious what's the status on the Rivians regarding this?

p.s. this might not mean much to most folks but this affects resale, insurance, and some other things.

Yep. RJ mentioned they would be pausing in January for some plant imrpovements.

We have a couple reported in that thread, one in double digits and 1 in the 200 range. Would not be surprised to see some R1Ts as well.

Does make it a little harder to get total numbers built so far and will make it a little harder to track the 2023 build numbers as well.

Tesla now changes to the next year on the Title in late fall. That started in 2020.
My Model Y was built in Sept 2020, I took delivery on Nov 3rd 2020 and the title said "2021 Tesla Model Y".

I'm matched with an R1S, and as I'm looking at the contract to purchase on 1/20/23, it says 2022 model year. I'm wondering why...this will affect my resale when I'm at the last possible moment for a switch to 2023 model year.

I just sent a message to my guide. I'm unmatching from this 2022. My delivery window is Feb-Mar, there is no reason for me to take an outdated model year. I've waited 2.5 years, I can wait another 30-45 days.

Well, it certainly affected the resale value of my 2018 E63S (delivered during 2019 model year), so I'm not making that mistake again. I'm less worried about the updates, more worried that I will unnecessarily lose several thousands of dollars in value for the mere additional wait of 30-45 days. Perhaps you want to throw a few thousand out for little reason, but I don't.

I took delivery of my 2023 R1T on 01/07/23 VIN # 00063. I was confused at the beginning but I'm glad it's 23. I think it will make a difference when selling, but I bet there are still a lot of 22's around being finished.

There is no difference between the 2022 and 2023 Rivian models. If you take a couple of random vehicles and run them through KBB the value ranges between a 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 given same miles overlap and the medians are like 1k to 3k different so not really a huge difference.

I just signed my purchase agreement for a low serial number 2022, don’t plan on selling anytime soon so I’m not going to worry about it.

Keep in mind if you keep the MSRP under 80k and take delivery before the battery details are created by the IRS which will be after February and very well could be after March, you will get the 7500 tax credit that will more than cover any delta in selling price.
