wow, who ever thought protecting your car and throwing some tint on it could be so $$$$....

after calling a few vendors I've settled on a local vendor who is providing:
1. full front PPF (lights, skid plate, mirrors, a pillars, etc; Kavaca; 12 year warranty)
2. Ceramic Pro Pro ION (2 base coats, 1 top coat; lifetime warranty) full vehicle, windows and wheels
3. window tint Ceramic Pro Ultimate IR

what % tint did everyone get, I'm in california and, yeah, cops are a bit anal about tint but I have a lawyer that can get these types of tix excused. that doesn't meant i want to go full dark because police will still pull you over...so how dark is the average Rivian owner going? how dark to match the side windows?

Thanks,
Zor

I went with full PPF. A lot of folks don't buy into PPF because they feel it doesn't increase resale value and they can just touch up paint and perfections. But I always get at least full frontal. On my R1T I did a full PPF but my wife chose not to do any PPF on her R1S so we did a ceramic coating on that. Both of them got tint. Wife went with 35% 3M crystalline and I went with XPEL 20%. Legal limit here in Maryland is 35% so technically both of them are not legal but with trucks and SUV I have never had an issue.

On an off-road vehicle if you plan on taking it off road it's probably a good investment to have PPF. The other thing is with a truck. The bedside and tailgate can really get torn up if you use it for truck things. So PPF a good idea there as well.

Just my two cents.

I'm in California too and did all my windows with Xpel Prime XR+ at whatever the lightest tent is. I don't look sketchy, pedestrians and cyclists can still see me at intersections, and it still offers awesome heat rejection.

I went w/ 45% on driver/passenger windows (35% max by law in MD), 5% on windshield, and 75% on rest of glass including roof using XPEL PRIME XR PLUS: nano-ceramic particle formulation blocks 99 percent of the sun’s UV rays and more than 98 percent of its heat and infrared radiation—all without the metallic ingredients other films use that can disrupt radio, cellular and Bluetooth usage inside your car.

I'm holding off 6 months for PPF per my colleague's recommendation who also is a detailer who's adamant that PPF not be applied until the factory paint is *fully cured* no earlier than 6 months.

This is the first I've heard of this! Thank you for the heads up.

It was a first for me as well. Apparently, it can lead to paint cloudy issues later according to her.

Watch some videos on how it’s done. The high cost should become immediately self-evident. It’s labor intensive (time, not difficulty) and part marketing (it’s a given those who want it done have the means to pay for it).

To match factory tint on rear windows, 20%. Ceramic is optional, but will help PPF weather UV and debris. Some brands/models of film have ceramic embedded already (SunTek Reaction, for example). For most part, with ceramic applied, bird droppings would rinse right off.

Regarding paint curing… I call FUDD. The paint is cured at the factory as a stage of the paint line. Then from end of assembly to delivery there is at least one month duration with the car sitting in holding lots out in the sun or on rail cars, with a wrap (usually opaque white) to protect paint during transport. Then at the delivery Service Center, they remove film and do a final polish. By the time you have taken possession the paints has had ample chance to “cure”. Should you ever decide to remove PPF, it will need polishing and sealing—which is standard procedure once PPF is removed in any case. Where you run into problems with paint damage is when you wrap with cheap substandard film. That, is where all cautionary tales come from.

I had my Tesla model 3 wrapped immidiately after delivery. Zero issues and glad I didn't Risk damage and chips while letting it "cure". I'm getting my R1s wrapped the day after delivery.

The most cost effective route I found in the "bay area' was at a shop in Pittsburgh. I had my truck done there. Had the full truck wrapped with PPF in the 3M Matte product, PPF cermaic coat applied on top of the PPF, and had all the windows (including the roof) tinted with a ceramic tint. Everything out the door was right at $6,100. The shop owner is all about customer service and customer satisfaction. Most of their work done there is to repair botched PPF applications. They will also offer you their honest advice based on your preferences.

(For apples to apples comparison, the full PPF wrap with a cermic coat applied on top was $5,600.)

Auto Design Pro is the shop and I would recommend them.

My R1S tinting (45% on driver/passenger windows, 5% on windshield, 75% on rest of glass including roof) using ceramic-based XPEL PRIME XR PLUS cost me ~$1,500 of which $550 was just for the roof glass.

As far as PPF pricing, the same place gave me the quotes below.

Car Full Front using XPEL Ultimate Fusion: $2,500.00
Front bumper, full hood, full fenders, mirrors, headlights
Car Track using XPEL Ultimate Fusion: $4,250.00
Protect the full hood, front fenders, front bumper, mirrors, front lights, rocker panels, and rear bumper

Car Full Vehicle PPF (Gloss) using XPEL Ultimate Fusion: $6,300.00
Full vehicle covered in XPEL Fusion

Car Full Vehicle Stealth PPF (Satin) using XPEL Stealth PPF: $6,750.00
Full vehicle covered in XPEL Stealth PPF

Prices vary pending location/shop. In general, 5k for full PPF, 1k for ceramic, 600 for ExoShield on windshield exterior and 250 to tint two windows.

Figure out which brand PPF you want, premiere brands right now are XPEL, SunTek and STek. Then, go to their pages to find authorized installers near you. With that list, look up their social media accounts and see if they've done Rivians. Ask questions and get quotes.
