Winter Tires on the 20" Wheels

I have a separate set of wheels with Blizzack tires for my R1. Two years ago they were pretty necessary on that Denver to Summit county trek. I got the EVSportline ones.

The snow tires weren't necessary last winter because, uh, we didn't have a winter. Hopefully the upcoming winter is better.

I have 100% confidence that aftermarket options will pop up pretty quickly for the R2. Just give it a few months.

Yeah, this last season sucked. Hopefully with El Niño this year we might get more snow than usual. We definitely need it. I’ve seen the EVSportline wheels for the R2, pretty expensive and what pushed me away from buying another set of wheels.

And then Michelin X-Ice Snow (about $1280 for all 4).

At $2,680+tax, seems pretty good.

I'd prefer getting the 20" AT wheels and putting the X-Ice on them for better aesthetics, but this would probably be 1/3rd of the price.

Interesting, they might be a good deal. They're lacking any real details, how much for they weigh and what are they rated at, but it might be a solution people are looking for.

Being in a norther state I know I'll get a winter set at some point. These may end up being a good value and if they do offer the 18" there might be some good tire options as well. At best I wouldn't take delivery of my R2 until winter is ending so I'll have some time to continue looking at my options.

Re: winter sets
In my experience (as R1T owner for 4 years, with sets of 20” and 21” wheels) and mounting / swapping tires on a single set of rims is slightly less painful as swapping wheels. The tires are obviously lighter and easier to store. I started with 21” but would now just focus on 20” with seasonal tire mounting and tire rotation (key to extending EV tire life).

I've always had a separate set of wheels on all of my cars (20 years now worth of cars/tires). Mostly because I can switch them out myself without a tire machine. I also wondered if removing and adding the tires over and over would cause them to wear out faster.

I like having a winter set that I can switch out myself. When the weather changes tire shops are crazy busy, it's easier and quicker to do it yourself.

I also don't live having a good wheel set. Handles and balanced twice a year.

Atomic Wheels can actually put together a rim +TPMS + tire of choice package and send it to you already balanced. I got a super fast response from them when I asked. Given their responsiveness, and the fact that their wheels are light and good looking, I’m leaning that direction.

I’ll probably use the Michelin X-ICE Snow tires. I’ve used those for 10 years and they’ve been great (different sets of course).

Rivian sells the Hakkas on a dedicated set in the gear shop for the R1, so I’m hoping that they’re working with Nokian on a tire for R2. As we’ve both said and I’m sure you’ve seen—ATs and all seasons are not a replacement for dedicated winters.

I’m stepping up from blizzaks to Hakkas for the better ice performance—especially on such a heavy vehicle. The Blizzaks have saved me from enough accidents I can justify buying the better set of Hakkas.

Are Hakkas known to be better on ice? I've never really had issues with my Michelin X-Ice or Blizzacks on snow, but ice is always tricky. Though I think no matter what tire you have, ice is always going to be dangerous.

I think getting winter tires for the R2, I'm going to prioritize ice issues over some kind of performance on snow. In the winter, I just want to be safe, I don't need to be speedy with amazing grip in snow. Just not die on ice.
