I'm looking for a Gen 1 key fob so I have an extra one when my wife wants to take the Rivian. My phone is reliable, and I keep my current key fob in a box by the trailer hitch as a backup. I don't want to have to remove the hitch cover to access the fob unless it's an emergency (my phone isn't working) so I'd like a second fob to keep at home. I tried searching the forums but can't seem to find answers how to get/sync a new fob. Rivian gear store only has Gen 2 fobs.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

You can add keys at the vehicle (and to your account). Look around in the vehicle settings menu. But there is a max number of keys allowed to be paired to each gen 1.

IMO, don't waste money on the fob and it's not a good backup because the battery will eventually die. When you do need to use it as backup, it may be dead and useless. Keep a keycard in your wallet to use as backup (and valet). And so should your wife.

Both of you should be using your iPhone (or Android phones) or Apple Watch (newer than Watch 4) as your primary keys. Functionally, covers all functions of a fob, plus more. Not to mention additional native iOS and Watch OS functions that aren't Rivian related...

The fob is an outdated device and discontinued for good reason.

Thanks for the response. Where can I get a keycard and are they programmable (I see them on Ebay)?

See your local Rivian Service Center. They program it for you. I would not bother spending $ on secondhand keycards on the chance your SC refuse to program it due to security concerns.

If you are in Canada or near Ontario I have one for sale from our first R1s that is no longer with us.

Please don't keep the key to the vehicle in a place easily accessible to someone outside the vehicle...

It’s not easily accessible. It’s under the plastic shield over the trailer hitch and in a locked magnetic case. It’s only for an emergency if my phone doesn’t work. It’s actually a pain to get to. That’s the point of having another fob/card.

Fobs do come up for sale on eBay, but they want $300 or more.
But Swampnut's suggestion sounds better - stash a key card, and give your wife the fob.

Our only use for the cards is backup/valet/service, but then we also don't use the fob. I'm wondering why she won't use her phone? Maybe OP just gives her a flip phone? LOL

If storing your fob in the trailer hitch I’d definitely recommend taking out the battery and keeping it separate. At least my G1 fob is dead every few months I pull it out to use it just for “fun”

I would just keep the fob safe at home in a faraday box. Use it only for taking vehicle in for service at SC. With smartphone app, watch app and keycards... all uses are covered and then some. There's no reason to go to an overpriced, discontinued and antiquated device. Keycard takes up hardly any space and exactly the same dimensions as bank cards and driver's license, which most of us already carry with us. It's perfect for backup and valet. And for valet, it's the perfect test to see if the valet is competent enough to be trusted—instructions for use is right on the card itself (if they can’t understand that... should you really leave your car with them?!) Keycards are also less expensive to replace. Someone said Rivian has recently dropped price to $80. Used to be $120.
