This is something that NTSB should have banned. I am surprised Rivian built the R2 with this feature. I cant imagine how children or almost anyone could escape this car in an emergency the way the manual escape was implemented - espacially in the back seat. And really gave me pause about purchasing the car. Safety should come first...especially in a car focused on famiy adventure.
All cars I've ever owned up to my gen2 Rivian would have meant that my children could not escape the vehicle themselves through the rear doors because they had physical child locks. My gen2 Rivian is literally the only one they have any chance of doing it on if I have the locks engaged.

All this outrage over it is still just so laughable.

Yes - but in the crash emergency responders can open the door from the outside. Most child locks are set to disengage in a collision. FYI as beow

1. The Inside vs. Outside Distinction
  • Interior Handles: When engaged, child safety locks mechanically decouple the interior door handle from the latch. This prevents a child from accidentally opening the door while the car is moving.
  • Exterior Handles: Child locks have no effect on the outside handle. Anyone standing outside the vehicle can still pull the lever and open the door. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

2. Automatic Post-Collision Safety Systems
  • System Unlocking: Modern vehicles are programmed to automatically unlock all doors and turn on the hazard lights the moment a crash sensor is triggered. This makes the exterior handles fully functional immediately after impact.
  • Smart Sensors: Many newer vehicles (like the Hyundai Smart Sense or Kia Drive Wise) feature active systems that actually prevent a door from opening from the inside if an oncoming car is detected. Once the vehicle is stationary and the danger has passed, standard door unlocking protocols apply. [1, 2]

I sent WeatherTech an email about a rear cargo area protection mat, like I have in my Jeep. They responding saying they don't have an R2 to measure yet. Since Rivian doesn't produce all-weather mats for this part of the vehicle, it seems they should be providing WeatherTech the dimensions.

Please ping WeatherTech as it would be great to get a protective mat before making a mess!
This! I looked at the all-weather mats offered by Rivian, and they don't come up on the sides like WeatherTech mats. I've had WeatherTech mats in all our vehicles for years now. Nothing else keeps the vehicle as clean.

The other accessory I'm waiting for is spacers for the suspension. The R2 still needs a bit more of a lift to go to more off-road.

Crash responders are minutes out. The concern anyone seems to care about is the lithium battery causing the vehicle to rapidly burn down. A severe enough accident can mean being in the cabin 60 seconds after the crash is a death sentence.

Anyone seriously concerned about this is already carrying window breaking tools with them at all times. Doors aren't always operable at all because of damage, and sometimes they are blocked from opening.

Or is it just paranoia?

Usually the first responders are the bystanders and uninjured that are nearby and minutes may be all you have. And while I do carry window breaking tools they might not be much help to a panicked kid in the back seat - especially if I am disabled in the crash. There have been multiple EV crashes - mostly involving Teslas - where people have died because others couldnt open the doors from the outside. What I dont understand is why you find this so laughable.

Very Cool! Nice work. Too bad Rivian doesn't make the rear trunk cover a foldable table like the old Honda-CRV's

I totally can it actually stores away the way the picture is shown just the cover goes on top
Yo, this is rad! Definitely would love more info about this. I have so many questions about the protective top, dimensions, how the legs attach/disconnect for storage, etc. If you make a detailed video, please do post it here for us. I am definitely interested in R2 camping.

My video for the time being would be a response for the R1S (took me 4 years to perfect everything on the side) I am on travel but when I get back next week ill make a full video.

I'm researching mats but will never buy WeatherTech again- EVERY set I have had in my cars eventually warps around the edges of the footwell, allowing all that great Minnesota slushy road salt to seep under and onto the floor/carpet.

I'm thinking about 3D scanning the frunk to then 3D print a mold to fill with foam to make a custom-fit cooler.

I have a lot of 3D printing planned for my R2 to really customize it to my liking.
Stupid question, what would you use to scan that large of an item?

There are decent budget hand-held 3D scanners out there that can do something much larger, like the Einstar Rigil.
