Subaru had made their entire business on ground clearance and good AWD. People all across the northern half of the country love the extra ground clearance and AWD in the snow and woods.
Subaru's do not have more ground clearence than the average CUV like the CRV or the RAV4, they built their business on standard AWD, and appealing to women and being not flashy.

Regarding Subaru, my wife has an Ascent, fantastic vehicle. We always need a medium sized SUV for skis and stuff. I suspect we are not unlike most prospective R2 owners, we are not going off-roading. We need a reliable vehicle for mountain snow, reasonable space for putting stuff in the back cargo area and a nice comfortable interior.

R2 will be perfect for us, only time I need anothing other than A/S tires is for winter, sadly we will get stuck with AT tires which will not have the proper compound for snowy mountain roads.

I think too many on this forum think the majority are gonna use R2 for off road type adventures

Another giveaway that Rivian is targeting the soft roader mommy mobile (Model Y) crowd is that only the Performance is available with AT tires. All of the lower trims are AS-only. In other words, the eventual volume sellers aren’t going to be factory equipped for serious rock crawling.

Configuration of choice here is a Launch Green Performance with 20" Black Sand AT.
I will still have to wait for the aftermarket to develop spacers for the suspension.

It will be replacing a lifted '17 Subaru Forester XT that goes off-roading frequently.

What's dumb is that this ends up making the vehicle objectively worse at its main function of transport as the AT tires end up being noisier and less fuel efficient.

But what is funny is that it is truly all about the looks. I eat it up too. The offroad stuff just adds a certain flair missing on most modern car design and I think that is what appeals to people. Not necessarily what it can do. Another appeal I find to offroad trims or variants is that due to them being marketed this way, this usually means more durable materials and more protection underneath the vehicle. This helps with longevity and is a nice added bonus.

Marketing will never be honest with us so we can expect to continue to see absurd commercials of a CRV going off the beaten path but in reality I think people like the more unique looks, added protection and durability. IMO this market is always a good place to play in and always wide open for customers. I don't think it is meant strictly for offroaders. You want your favorite vehicle but more durable and higher clearance? Here you go. Heck, even Porsche did it with the 911 Dakar.
The 911 Dakar is a perfect example of Form over Function. I think they are dumb, and I generally like 911s.

This is a pretty good comparison of R2, Volvo, and BMW.

I don't see an option to configure a Performance without LE. I'm pretty confident I'm so low on the reservation list that LE won't be available to me, so I would like to see what a Performance vs Premium would look like.

I'm not sure where I am on the list (I reserved one in Nov 2024), but I'm hoping they'll keep selling the LE to anyone who agrees to buy one during the initial run.

The LE is just a performance with a tow hitch. You also get autonomy+, a key fob, and launch green paint option. Nothing is physically different on a LE than a performance trim.

They probably have an initial number in mind to make and sell of them. If more early people order then they'll get through that number earlier. I am guessing a lot of early reservations didn't want performance version and/or wanted lower price and/or wanted different paint/interior and are willing to wait 6-9 more months.

If the light interior is not available on LE, I will pass. I doubt lidar will be useful for a few more years.

I understand there is not a physical difference, I was referring to price.
