My husband and I test drove the R2 today and we love it. However, the sun was coming down on our heads which was making it hot. Does anyone know if it's some type of retractable cover or something else you can put over it to reduce the heat from the sun? Any suggestions or feedback you have would be great. This might be a 50/50 deal-breaker for me.

Thanks

There are third party companies that make magnatic covers that you just pop up there and it stays until you take it down. I'm sure Rivian will have something as well shortly.

Magnetic is out. Doesn't stick for aluminum and glass. Most.shades have little clips that slide under the headliner. There are two piece solutions that have magnets to connect the fore and aft pieces for a more rigid installation. There is a company that sells a carbon composite drop-in replacement for the R1T roof glass. You can have windshield tint film installed on the roof. Most of the heat comes in through the windshield of the R1s so fixing the roof might not help much.

Your head getting hot under a pano roof isn't so much the heat coming in, it's the infrared heating your scalp.

Consider window tint - we’ve been tinting our cars recently with DMV approval to do windshield. Plan for R2 when the time comes: Xpel XR Plus 55 on pano roof, and 70 on windshield & front windows.

Other common brands are 3M and Llumar, many others too. Rivian has a deal with Xpel, so I started and stopped there. I also like that 55 has a blue hue, and 70 has gray-green hue. Xpel guy advised not to go darker than 50 on pano due to stress on glass and potential for cracking.

During my test drive, the Rivian folks said there would be some sort of clip-in shade available soon. I am in Dallas, and so was interested to see that the window did seem to have a good tint on it from the factory.

Going out on a limb here and expect to get scorched. Why not have an option for a metal roof? The glass roof is only convenient for the back seat people to look up - assuming they do look up. Makes the car hotter in the sun and I bought a sunshade I never use because it is a pain to put up. I can't see out of the roof as a driver and rarely have people in the back seat - so why have it? Or at least have an option for a "normal" roof.

R2 (soon hopefully)
What type of tint is safe to use on the roof? I see people online claiming you will heat up the glass and it will explode/shatter etc. Then I see others saying it's fine.

Nobody actually knows. The results are random, opinions are all over the place. The OUTSIDE film recommended above is not a problem, it stops heat before it hits the glass. I don't know whether my truck has inside tint or not, I bought it used with tint on all the other glass already.

I’ll probably be sticking with the XR black. 70 for the back sides and sliding glass, 45 for the front sides, but the unsure what I wanna put on the roof. 70 or 55-

It's worth noting that the shade or transmissibility (VLT) of a ceramic or metallic tint doesn't affect the heat performance to any major extent. It's just for looks and/or light sensitivity. It does very little for solar heat rejection (TSER), which is fixed at around 60% for good ceramics.

Well, I wouldn’t say that number is minor either. If it helps, it helps. Here’s the XR black specs

That is questionable advice. 99% of the heat blockage comes from the IR, and the IR is blocked equally in all shades. The blocked IR/heat is absorbed by the tint and conducts that heat to the glass. Too much conduction might crack the glass, but the conduction should be virtually identical on 50% and 10% and 90%, since those transmission numbers are for the visible and not IR wavelengths.
