100% there should be an "eject" button. The human passengers should not be trapped in a death drive (potentially) like this:

Couple of friends arrived about an hour late for dinner last week. Apparently, they used Waymo and it took a "scenic" route. They could not do anything at all. Just sat there until it finished.

While their knickers turned out just fine, that "scenic" route might have been dangerous. And even if not, the passengers should have SOME control. NO?

Every easy solution has at least one potential drawback.

A "stop now and pull over" button could facilitate domestic/dating violence, or could lead the car to misjudge a safe place to pull over.

Sometimes there's no substitute for a human observer with cameras and good judgment.

I’ve ridden in them a lot. Always super clean, even the old ones are in great shape, and more consistent than all the other options. Since I’ve needed a sorta rescue from an incident, I can tell you what the “emergency” options are and how they handled it (great). During the wife’s first ride I hit the help button to show, and explained to the person, who walked her through some options for issues.

Here’s my video. I was armed, so I wasn’t super worried, but kind of excited to see how it would all go down. I’m used to dealing with the vermin in that part of the city. Also this was years ago, they are much better now.

Also getting a taxi/uber/lyft in the middle of the night is a nightmare. Don't think Waymo is going to cancel my ride because it doesn't feel like taking me to the Airport. Also not really trying to make small talk with anyone at that time either.

Apparently, the future will be filled with misanthropes who feel so threatened by their fellow citizens, they will eschew any human contact outside of their small circle of family and trusted friends. As I wrote previously with intended sarcasm, but unintended prophetic accuracy:

I look forward to automated insurance adjusters. No need to wait for and explain to an agent the extent of destruction and discuss policy coverage. Just upload some pictures and wait for a check to arrive.

I look forward to further advancements in robo surgeons and the precision they promise. No need to rely on the insight and experience of a bright and gifted human who is prone to err. Just trust the computerized, sterile machine to slice and stitch and respond instantly to any of thousands of pre-programmed complications.

I look forward to Cyber sex and the pleasure it promises. No need to deal with awkward and potentially infected Humans and the emotional aftermath, or the financial strain of raising offspring. Just apply the bio sensors and let the machine read the physiological feedback and bring me to orgasmic climax without any ickiness, guilt or uncomfortable cuddling.
