Glass Ceiling Treatment?

I'm on the waitlist but planning to tint/treat the glass ceiling to mainly reduce the heat on sunny summer days and the extra light in general.

I just watched a YouTube video for tinting the windows but no mention of the ceiling.

1. Are heat and light separate components when it comes to tinting options? What would you recommend? Never had any tinting/treatment on my vehicles so I'm researching.

2. I've read that there are ceiling shades for the R1, are they easy to put and take down?

The anecdotal stories about tinting the glass roof range from "It's fine" to "No way!". Most debate whether under hot sun or severe cold, does the tint film stress the large expanse of glass to the point of cracking it.

Save yourself the headache of sorting through the tint debate, warranty arguments, etc and just get a snap-in shade (or a fancier retractable one) when they inevitably come out in a few months.

Rivian themselves recently released a roof shade for R1S, which indicates they will probably have one for the R2 sooner or later. And there will be a number of aftermarket options once there are enough R2s delivered for these accessory companies to get their hands on one to measure.

Bah humbug. I've had 3 rivians and got all of them tinted with 3M heat rejecting film (crystalline) with modest shading. The darker tints tend to absorb heat fwiw and create many of the horror stories you read about. I have gotten the windshield (70%) the sides and the roof all tinted on every vehicle. Makes a big difference. Imo 3M is a good compromise of high quality and reasonable price.

I have them for my Model 3. They’re all about the same. They fold up pretty compactly. There are little plastic clips that hold them into place. I don’t take mine off, but you could pretty easily.

I've never heard of risks to a glass roof being able to crack due to tints. My Lucid Gravity has had tints on the roof for over a year and have had 0 issues with the glass. I also live in a climate where while it's not crazy hot like the desert it's mostly sunny throughout the year.

I also do utilize sun shades for the Gravity which also help with the temperature but overall. I'd expect similar results on the R2 once Rivian releases their shades.

Has anyone tried exterior tint? This is like ppf and sits outside, instead of inside. The good thing about this is that it heats the glass much less than an internal film, because it reflects heat before it passes through the glass.

Have seen this done there is actually a video on youtube where someone used ppf on the exterior and did some temperature checks of the glass. Definitely provided less heat build up in the glass itself, but it did have a cloudy look from the ppf. So kind of a trade off there. (This was done on a Model Y if I remember correctly)

I've gone back and forth about this myself and will probably do 70% on windshield, 25% all around and see how it goes from there. Maybe by the time my number gets called something will exist that I can live with.

There's more than a decade of NHTSA data and claims of roofs exploding/breaking "randomly" and attempts to correlate to aftermarket treatments. There's never been "conclusive" evidence. But what is on record, and many in the industries, OEM's and glass treatment companies, seem to all point to something along the likes of "if there is a defect in the glass (either inherent from the manufacture or caused by a rock chip, crack etc), then additional heat or other affects of tinting or treatments may exacerbate the likelihood of failure" rather than the treatment itself causing the failure. Again, nothing evidentiary or conclusive. My insurance will cover the pano under the same terms as windshield replacement, but not if I treat it. Given the replacement costs, I'll not take the risk of insurance saying no

All kinds of opinions on this topic, from interior sunroof tint doesn't matter at all to guaranteed cracked roof if you put 99% VLT on it - reality is likely somewhere in-between. My Xpel guy said he's been directed not to go darker than 55 on roof.

Since above wouldn't need to withstand wiper action like windshield film, perhaps it has more optical clarity by comparison (?) -
