Latest OTA Updates Adds Surround View Camera

Only in reverse? Really? If true, that is about 25% as useful as it could be when off-roading.

I'd guess it kicks on automatically in reverse. During my test drive the Rivian person showing me the vehicle turned the camera views on in motion just like you can do on a Tesla so I don't know why this would be any different.

Glad they added this. F150 Lightning has it too, and its really helpful for pulling into my garage because I have to angle it in a bit before straightening it out. My Model Y beeps at me and gives me a visual of how far away the garage wall is, but 360 degree camera is a lot more helpful.

I love this feature and will find it hella-useful, but something about that picture is bothering me. The rearview shot on the right side of the photo shows the curb to the left of the vehicle. But the birds-eye view shows the curb is on the right of the vehicle. What am I missing?

I use mine all the time and love it. Most common usage is parking at work. The spaces are small and I like to make sure I’m mostly centered to minimize door dings.

It’s mirrored. Just like looking out the rear view mirror. Isn’t that how all of them work? (Not trying to sound facetious)

I knew I was missing something -- I was looking at it as if it was a camera pointed directly rearward without mirroring. Which is kinda weird since I use my vehicle's backup camera every day and it mirrors the view just like every other car.

I just wanted to comment to express my extreme pleasure at this news item. My 2008 Infiniti has Eagle-eye view and it is a game changer. Like push-button start it's an essential in my book.

For whoever asked, this view is most useful when backing into a parking place. You can align yourself perfectly between other vehicles; you can tell precisely when to stop. Essentially it's like parking your car in a top-down video game, instead of from the inside of a 7000 lb vehicle with various views obstructed.

Funny story - my father in law saw me parking with this view on and he was stunned. He started looking up at the sky through the windshield, trying to figure out if there was a satellite, or drone, or angel, or what that was giving me a real-time top-down view.

I don't use it for anything but parking, as the range of the cameras is only 3 or 4 feet from the vehicle on every side. I imagine it could be good on a trail.

The only downside? When a spider decides to crawl across one of the cameras.

The surround view in the Bolt is awesome... I used to literally park 2" or less from the curb without ever damaging my rims. The secret was.. Chevy put a dedicated straight down facing cam in each of the outside rear view mirrors which gives a spectacular down view without software stitching. I've never seen a better implementation than was done in the Bolt. With that said, happy Rivian has come up with something to help prevent curbing our $500+ rims every time we try to park.

The other great thing the Bolt had was a front bumper cam (right above the license plate frame) which enabled you to get up nice and tight while pulling in to parking spots.

@NooterIA, Pretty sure they filled documentation with the FCC for use of a transmitter with freq. range used in garage door openers so I think it's there.
@Rivian_Hugh_III, Just an FYI their is no push to start in the R1's. I believe they wake up when they sense a good credential (key) and respond to controls (like selecting drive or reverse) without any other input to "start-up". I have not seen an R1 in person I just spend to much time reading forums so I can't guaranty I'm correct.

I was driving a new Buick SUV this morning with the same setup. So good.

at first mile they told me yes it does have garage door opening abilities, software not enabled on early vehicles.

The R1 is “started“ by pressing the brake pedal. Same as tesla etc.
