Just hitting a point in the road where I can go two ways. With everything going on in the world today and gas prices through the roof, I’m contemplating trading in my F150 for a Tesla model Y while waiting for my R1S to deliver, whenever that may be. But I am having trouble either deciding to just wait the possible two more years for the R1S ( sept 21 order ) or trade in my truck now for a Tesla model Y until I either can move that for the R1 or decide to not go the Rivian route. My truck now is about 8k off the price I bought it for over 4 years ago. So not bad with current market for used trucks. Any opinion or advice here would be greatly appreciated!

I’d like to add that I’ve never had an EV so this would be my first!

My opinion is get the Model Y. Cash in on the great resale value of your F-150 and save money on gas by going electric.

We did this, 4runner for a VW ID.4 last summer until delivery of our R1T. We really enjoy the electric vehicle, and it is an adventure of its own, but we are feeling a little handicapped with some mountain trips. Can’t get up 4WD roads right now which is ok, but sometimes limiting. Camping with 4 is pretty tight. We don’t regret the decision but depending how much you use the “truck” features of your truck it has downsides.
On the other hand it gave us a much better idea what living with the R1T will be like considering charging networks and range; every trip we consider how the rivian will do, how long it will take to charge, etc. and we are feeling way more confident with the decision to purchase.

I have really not used my truck for it’s truck purposes for some time. So that aspect is why I was going to go for the R1S instead of the R1T. Done with truck world at least for now. I will however miss the 4x4 whenever we make road trips up the mountains in Georgia and Tennessee. Luckily that’s maybe once a year and in good weather. Thanks for your input.

It really depends on your needs, not sure we can answer that? For example, I could never do it. For multiple reasons, including towing, a Model Y won't work for me. If you can live without towing or payload/hauling capabilities of the F150, then it may be a good time financially to move on....

If I didn't need a truck I would probably be considering the same thing. If I were you I would cash in on the nice used value on your F150 and go for the EV now. That is assuming you don't also have to wait for the Tesla.

The other thing to consider is when a Model Y might even be available. I recall checking a couple of weeks back and the cheapest option had a delivery estimate of Dec 22. Spring for some upgrades and you can get it as soon as August.

Literally the same.

I've gone on some fun forest roads, but obviously limited with the ID.4 compared to a Jeep or F150 or something. The Y would be more limited than the ID.4 just by ground clearance.

As far as the site quotes ( which could possibly be wrong ) the model I would get estimated a delivery by May.

After looking at the delivery timeline of early/mid 24 for my R1S, I made the reservation for a Model Y, before the 1k price hike. Expected to get it August/September. Hoping the price of the Y holds for another 2 years so I can trade it in when the R1S becomes available. If you do reserve the Performance model you should get it in 3 months. Good luck.

Model Y or Model 3 are both great cars. If either is able to suit your needs, then yes I would make the switch ASAP. For reasons I cannot understand Tesla's hold their value ridiculously well. Even before the pandemic used Tesla's sold for near-new prices. You are very unlikely to lose much to depreciation.

IMO, it makes no sense to drive a big pickup truck around if you don't need the capabilities of a big pickup truck. But if you do need a pickup truck or something of similar size/capability, you shouldn't be considering any sedan/crossover/small suv.

The Y is absolutely not off-road worthy, way too stiff and too low.
