+1000 points for one of the best forum responses I've read all week.
Also keep in mind that paint booth is handling the body only - not the bumpers or any painted exterior plastic. This is usually done by the component supplier.

It’s got tiger striping along the roof on both sides too…saw it today in direct sunlight. ?‍♂ Guess I’ll see what they can do but I dunno…
Curious if they will repaint it and return to you, or just put you in a new truck.

Hopefully the fact that this is an early unit and therefore a very visible representation of their brand will also help the outcome.

Another option is shipping a painted hood skin and replacing it at a service center.

I’m sorry that blows but I do feel vindicated that it is elsewhere. Paint is really fucking hard and IMO takes a LOT of work and time to get a paint shop running smoothly.

I’d bet It is probably on the top bits of the bed too, but that’s mostly under trim pieces etc. what do you think rivian will do?

How difficult would it be to swap out with a new truck with regards to the VIN numbers on the DMV, insurance, and loan docs (assuming someone financed it, if not then just the DMV and insurance).

Reshoot it. But they don’t have a dealer network with paint shops so their only capital and expertise is back in normal. They probably have a few body shops they’ve partnered with for collision training that may be an option. If I were running the show I’d swap dudes with a known good LE while the monkey circus tries to figure out the best way to route the repair. Easy to save face and buys some time for the fix.

I don’t envy the poor soul having to do all the paperwork behind the scenes to keep it all straight.

The VIN has to stay with the chassis. The swap would look more like a new car purchase and some voided paperwork with a lot of initials on it.

Guess we’ll find out Monday. I can’t believe this made it through QC. Unless they hired Tesla to QC it circa 2015.

Hopefully they just replace it. That would surely be less downtime than waiting to repaint and get back to you. Not like they’d have any issues selling it on after respray, or folding it into their loaner/service fleet.

I know someone who works at Tesla, their daily driver is a model Y that failed end of line inspection ?

I agree. Hopefully that’s the outcome.

I look at it and I’m like “wtf, so pissed” then I drive it somewhere and I’m like “You amazing bastard! Lol

Maybe you can sell it to the guy that wants to pay $120-130K for a brand new LE R1T? Since his offer is low, maybe he wouldn't mind the paint inconsistencies and you make a tidy profit?
Not a bad idea, for sure.

Bummer for you to have to deal with this.

Seems like based on what you are saying you did not originally see it either. Sounds like something that shows in specific lighting and now that you have seen it, it is screaming at you to look at it.

If it is a lighting situation that exposes it probably not that hard to understand how it was missed. At least now they can add whatever lighting is needed to the QA processes looking for this.
