I’m new to EVs and charging as well and still learning what it all means, but what I have realized, is how pathetic Minnesota’s current charging networks seems to be.

For those of us from here, why is that the case? For a state that is considered progressive and green, it seems we’re light years behind.

We’re in a DT condo that does have access to charging, and we’re in the process of starting to look to build a home, so we’ll put in two chargers there, but trips to the cabin are going to be more of a challenge than I thought. I’m assuming we’re going to have to put in a 220v outlet at both our folks cabins so we can even consider driving the future Rivian up north and back.

I’m honestly not sure in the general sense. EA just didn’t see value here because of our poor adoption numbers until recently when they’ve been closing the corridors.

From my various looking the VW settlement grants are mostly being used to create these tiny 50kw stops and a bunch of L2 at government facilities.

I mean there’s no CCS in the Brained/Baxter area for crying out loud. I don’t get these “charging corridors” they’re building for a population that has a large amount of summer properties. If Tesla ever opens the supercharger network here it would fill in a ton of holes that I know I would at least appreciate.

I see nothing but a single station 30 miles away with 70kw or better. WTF But there are a few 50 kw chargers around. I should have ordered my charging units sooner but I was pleasantly surprised by my R1T arriving sooner than anticipated
Sucks that the charging situation in MN is not yet up to snuff. That said, once you get your level 2 charger, this issue will disappear for you. When you're around town, you'll see that you will rarely if ever charge outside your house. Hopefully the charger gets to you sooner than later.

Enjoy the truck!!

Another thought I had after visiting the St. Louis Park service center was why wouldn't Rivian put in at least one DC fast charger there?? They have a row of 5-6 chargers out front but all level 2. Suppose that's meant for loaners or such but still a wasted opportunity. BTW the dudes working there are really cool/friendly if you catch them outside. I got to see the BM interior up close after chasing the guy down.

I keep thinking about driving over there but I never go that way anymore. I’ll have to pair it with a trip to microcenter.

But I do know that DCFC is very expensive to install as opposed to L2. There was a guy on Reddit a while back posting the estimates he was getting for single 50kw installs and it was between 150-250k.

Or maybe they plan to when they finally have RAN chargers available to install? RAN seems so nebulous at this point I do wonder how much of the original plan of that will come to fruition.

I suppose everything is relative, but I wouldn't consider Minnesota a progressive state... Clearly not when it comes to charging infrastructure, at least. For comparison, my state is banning registration for anything except EVs by 2030 and spending billions to improve charging infrastructure.

I would think they have a DC fast charger in the service area like Tesla which has a supercharger in service areas for diagnostic and repair work. Out front Tesla locations only have level 2 as well.

Yeah, my parents are in Crosslake and I noticed the complete lack of fast charging for anyone not in a Tesla in that area. I already told my dad I’d pay to add in a 220v to the garage, but I have no idea how much they might need to do to the panel yet. The GF’s parents are in the Detroit Lakes area and that’s even worse it seems. Frustrating.

So after 2 hours of jacking around I am back to the charging level I left home with. But am now charging at 130+ miles/hour a useable charging rate imho
Are you planning on installing a level 2 charger at home and/or a 14-50 plug with some decent amperage? In general you likely won't need to be charging on the road at all unless you road trip, right? At which point, as others have noted, the DCFC chargers that the upper midwest has generally adopted suck at ~50kw.

First Thanks I signed up and will be on my way to a 50kw charger. I had hoped the Rivian app would have served the same purpose but it doesn’t show the 50kw options (of which there aren’t enough) yet, on the app or in vehicle map.
It does. If you select a charger it shows what the maximum rating is. It would be helpful if it had filters that the user can select like plugshare has.

So my 2021 F-150 fuel cost is about $0.24 cents per mile and this charge session @50kw is at about $0.14 cents per. Using 16mpg for the Ford at $3.85 a gallon

While I can’t say all, I can say that several/all of the 50kw chargers I am aware of and that show up in PlugShare are not displayed on the Rivian app nor in the truck.

Yeah, I *believe* rivian limits it to chargers that are chargepoint, EVGO, and EA. Maybe more, but those are the ones I'm aware of. The other non-networked or small network chargers seem to provide a fairly low quality user experience from what I've seen.
