I really enjoy the google maps integration of my polestar 2. That will be hard to say goodbye too but at this rate I have plenty of time to make my peace with it.

I too agree that rivian should be partnering with the nascent leader in navigation: Garmin

I realize I am definitely in the minority here, but I have never been a fan of Android Auto, and always go for the built in nav option if possible. I have never had it work seamlessly 100% of the time in terms of connecting and being responsive, this is across multiple phones and cables. It works okay 80% of the time, but often I have to reconnect, unlock the phone, or some combination of the two. Maybe this is alleviated with wireless Android Auto, but I have no experience with that. I also am not a fan of Google's search optimization where it has a mix of your search history and what it thinks you want to go to next in terms of relevant results, i.e. it would often show me locations of chains much further away from me as more relevant selections.

I much prefer built in nav that is on when the car is on, and I can put in a address and go.

All this is to say, I bet I won't mind their nav.

100% agree with OP and hope it improves. System fails Minneapolis to Denver skipping the normal way that includes chargers for a route with none and tells me trip not possible!! So odd and would be great to see route options offered not unlike Google etc...... (fastest, shortest, etc).

I've lived in Seattle for over 15 years, and despite that knowledge I use NAV all the time - mostly for real-time traffic info to help me understand the best route. If the native NAV app doesn't even route properly (that I-405 carpool issue sounds really bad) then that is a pretty big problem.

I've only been using the truck for 10 days and have used the navi about a dozen times. It's not as good carplay or AA but it's better than any other in-car nav I've had in the past. It's really not that bad.

Day 13 update: my center display map no longer 3d follows my position while driving even though the drivers display does. The map remains eternally stuck and exploded out with the whole route. I can zoom in and recenter to my current location but the map won't update after I drive out of the centered area.

Mine did that too, but I isolated it to user error. Press the full route button to take it back.

Is that the full route button? I've tried selecting and unselected with no success.

That's it. Weird that it doesn't change anything for you.

Hey everyone,

If you're looking for a not so positive post from me about the R1T you've come to the right place.

I've had more driving time in the R1T and I can honestly say the built in navigation is less than ideal. In fact, it sucks. I think that's my biggest gripe with the vehicle so far.

I've found that it always tries to route you on carpool only exits and recognizes partial lane tolls on 405 as a "toll road" thereby completely disabling Driver+. It can't find a location name or addresses as well as Google Maps. The travel eta is also amazingly inaccurate. On surface streets, it has been too late in telling me when to make the next turn after I miss a turning it has to recalculate.

I understand software is difficult and Google maps wasn't built in 2 years. I tried to give Rivian the benefit of the doubt when I first saw the truck and spoke to their engineers at Fully Charged Live in February 2020. Where they believed they could do better than Google, hence why no Android Auto or Apple Carplay, and where one of the software engineers from ABRP spoke with them to work on integrating ABRP into the Rivian ecosystem.

Frankly I'm surprised by the lack of progress on this front. We currently don't have a "better than Google Maps" solution nor do we have the ability to send ABRP routes to the R1T. I think having a robust navigation solution is a key strategy to make this product successful. Entertaining alternative navigation solutions while they developed their own Rivian solution would also have been a wise solution.

As someone who's new to the Seattle area, driving around with an essentially dumb navigation system is not ideal. I also haven't found a good place to mount my phone to use Android Auto. I'm sure as more of us take our Rivian's to places we aren't familiar with by following their "Keep The World Adventurous Forever" slogan/motto, we will feel that the Rivian navigation solution is woefully inadequate. And we will wish that they implemented Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

The navigation bar they have to meet is awfully high and I hope they will be able to succeed. And when they do, how much time will have passed and at what cost?
FFS why didn't they use Google Maps as the base map? Sure, Map box is cheaper and can be made to look more "custom", but the data is just not even close to as good. This is a premium vehicle, and it should have the best mapping/navigation. Polestar did it right with Android Automotive. So seamless and accurate.

Probably needed a new/better USB/Lightning cable. Everyone who complains about buggy CarPlay on Volvos seems to have their issue resolved when using a new+quality cable. For some reason they're really picky, and cables that work fine for charging don't necessarily work reliably for CarPlay.
FWIW, I've had issues with CarPlay on my Bolt, and then Android Auto worked just fine in the same port. Both were with factory cables (Apple and Google respectively), and nearly new.

Can you send an address from your phone to the vehicle nav? I travel to pin drop locations / coordinates fairly frequently.

No, but Alexa can save your addresses, and it recognizes voice dictation way better than Siri does. So it's not a huge problem.
