I have my introductory Guide call on Friday. I’ve got a unique situation with what state the truck will be titled in that I plan to ask her about. I also plan to ask about whether the R1T is winch ready since that’s something I’d want to add aftermarket. Also will ask about delivery timing impact of Forest Edge vs. Black Mountain. What other typical questions are you all asking your guides? I don’t want to bombard her with tons of questions that I already know they won’t give a straight answer to, but at the same time don’t want to miss anything that I should be asking about.

I just had my guide call. I asked specifically about two specific items.
  • Requirements to have a phone with app installed (my phones don't support the app, and I'm not changing devices)
  • Ability to get seat time before signing on the dotted line
Overall experience was very good. Discussed our intended usage / lifestyle types of questions (activities/kids/pets). We decided to push configuration lock out a number of weeks while we ponder Max pack and 2023 delivery.

First contact with my guide yesterday, good conversation with an enthusiastic R1T owner and advocate. One of my concerns was to delay my delivery until 7/1 or later due to a state rebate ($4,000 in Illinois) for EV deliveries after 7/1. He said that will not be a problem since my LE green configuration is what Rivian is focusing on to get the most built. I also changed from the road tires to the all terrain based on his advice and my intended use. Bottom line is after the call I had a good feeling about the Rivian customer experience, I even called my broker and bought some more RIVN...hopefully at or close to the bottom!

What was the answer on the phone app question?

What was the answer on the phone app question?
At the moment, it appears to be part of the onboarding process, but guide said they could likely find a workaround and that it wasn't required to operate the vehicle. There would obviously be a loss of phone as key & remote monitoring features, which is fine with me.

Out of curiosity, what phone do you use?

Without getting into specifics, we have both Android and iOS devices. The mobile applications have been artificially limited by SDK/OS version for no functional reason.

If you want to get into the weeds, I'm sure you could load up the android sdk and run an emulator for the app.

A lot of work on your end, but doable.

There's several things I could do, including tearing the app apart and repacking it with a more relaxed manifest and reduced SDK level. It just isn't worth the effort.
;)

What is the reason you're not willing to update to a more recent OS version? I assume you're several years out of date, then?

Android support doesn't always go back very far. Plus google changed their requirements in the last few years to target the current os or one previous for app releases.

Since Rivian's app is new, they probably only have support for the 2 latest os releases, which really cuts down the number of supported devices.

Additional since it is integrated with a vehicle, they may even limit it to specific devices they've tested.

Not fixing what isn't broken.
Not buying a new device when current one is perfectly functional.

Will you accept/apply OTA updates for your Rivian when it arrives?
