Rivian R1T bricked [update: 12v battery trickle issue - needs software fix]

UPDATE May 13:

Got the truck back.

The module that tells the truck it’s going to sleep and the high voltage should trickle the 12v doesn’t always tell it. It’s being worked on, hopefully the next software update contains the fix.

12v batteries got replaced because of it
Fingers crossed it doesn’t happen again before another update.



Original Post

Was driving around today and after a few stops, and showing off the truck, got in to depart and was met with system faults and turtle mode. Full truck reboot didn’t solve it nor an additional sleep cycle on top of that.

Parking brake is locked on and greyed out. Rivian is sending a tow and taking it down to the service center.

It was going to be going down Monday for some service, so now it’s just a bit earlier.
support has been great going through everything with me and arranging the Uber pick up to get me home.

Keep us posted on the root cause of the problem. My guess would be an issue with the 12v system.

its ironic but after 30+ years the main solution to s/w issues with any OS is to reboot. are we ever gonna move past that?

Did it show a battery (12V) error? Some vehicles will start showing a ton of codes if the voltage is out of spec. If that’s the case it may not be as dire as it looks. It could be like HAL singing “Daisy”

if it is a voltage issue then it should be easy to fix once the root cause is identified. I hope. Please keep us posted and good luck!

My understanding of the issue is that modern vehicles rely on numerous modules which communicate on a bus/in-vehicle network. When the voltage gets out of spec (typically too low) the modules can start acting flaky and/or communication issues arise. In either case the main computer thinks a lot of stuff is broken/offline and starts spewing error messages or fault indicators.

One of the Christmas tree looked like the 12v - but that wasn’t always showing when running through different attempts to work with it

just got towed away. With the parking brake locked, had to be done with skates and from the rear as it was nose into a spot.
Probably won’t hear much on it for a few days with the weekend upcoming
im Already having Rivian Withdrawal Syndrome.
