VW will launch the ID.Buzz March 9th as a 2024 model year with deliveries starting in 2023. Single and dual motor varients available with 300 mile expected range.

I plan on putting in a day 1 order for whatever launch/special edition they offer.
If it looks good, the wife may want to cancel it over the R1S if we can get the Buzz sooner.

I am having a weak moment. Thinking about Ioniq 5. I may need someone to talk me out of it.

Ioniq 5 pros for me:

  • It is here and I know what I am getting.. Rivian is not telling me what the delay would be for my explore R1S and I would not know what exactly I will be getting until 23 (there may be corners cut for Explore that has not been communicated).
  • I can get the tax credit this year.
  • Lighter than R1, easier on tires, on lift/jack, ….
  • Easier to park than R1S
  • It has a comfortable ride.
  • It is travel friendly (gains more miles faster both on slow chargers and fast chargers)
  • more future proof with 800V architecture.
  • Higher AC power (1.9 KW)
  • closer service center
  • less likely to need a service on a brand new car when I receive it.
  • Less complex suspension and probably less expensive after warranty.
  • Has android auto

Cons:
  • Can‘t car camp in it like R1S
  • not as cool as R1S
  • Have to deal with salesmen and dealers to purchase
  • no spare tire
  • can’t tow as much.
  • probably not as safe in an accident (more mass in R1S and probably sitting higher)
  • GIVE ME SOME MORE CONS
why should I wait for R1S Explore?

It's a Volkswagen. Sooner or later, you're going to have to deal with their shenanigans (this coming from a former VERY huge VW/Audi fan).
??? Ioniq 5 is a Hyundai

If you are ok with Ioniq 5 size and tow capacity, I think you should go for it. It would be also cheaper to run likely. For me, the reason for getting an R1S is the size.

Unless you are willing to pay significant dealer markup, your wait for Ioniq 5 might be even longer! I have looked into Ioniq 5 recently (not as a replacement for R1S I have on order). There is a limited number of Limited trim with AWD available in the US currently (and likely in foreseeable future), so dealers that have those in stock all tack on some markups (I have seen as much as $10K online). I have managed to get on a waiting list (very long, I have been told) at one of the few dealers willing to sell at MSRP with no add-on.

Based on what I have read, the Ioniq 5 seems very nice at its price range, but it only has 5 seats, which is not comparable to R1S unless you originally ordered the 5 seat version.

I have the Ioniq 5 Limited and love it. Our family went all-in early in the pandemic by going to one car and sold our Prius, having bought a Hyundai Palisade in January of 2020. Based on my experience with the Palisade, when the Ioniq 5 came out, I was very interested, especially when Hyundai was offering me the same amount on trade in as I originally paid on my now 2 year-old Palisade. I started looking in January of this year and secured one in February from an out of state dealer not charging a mark-up. My parents put in a deposit on one in January and just picked theirs up last week, having had to wait as opposed to going to a dealer charging a mark-up. I called dealerships from South Carolina to New York, most were charging markups from $2,000 to $10,000. The dealer my parents ordered from said they have sold every car already on its way to them and have 350 more orders on the books. I've heard of wait times in excess of 12 months on the forums. You very well might not have one this year if you order it now.

The car is great, but, for us, it replaces the Prius. The R1S replaces the Palisade. It's larger than it looks and will dwarf a golf or other hatchback in comparison. It is not, however, a three-row SUV and if you need that space, this won't cut it. Our cargo capacity on our annual OBX trip next month will be severely curtailed unless Rivian comes out with the craziest of 4th down play sprinkled with a healthy dallop of miracle dust... and RJ solves time travel.

Either way, I love the Ioniq 5. It's fast, range is not an issue, I like the infotainment & tech package, I think it looks the business, and it doesn't have a "T" on the front and back. You should test drive one if you can. Of course, I'm not looking at it vs an R1S, but as the R1S's sidekick.

@Tango45 , @Gamma rays , @313c7r1c, @E.S. and @R1Sky Business thanks for taking the time to respond. I don’t need the third row but I was hoping to replace my truck by using the space inside and pulling a trailer for occasional truck use. So if I get the Ioniq 5, I may have to keep the truck for as long as it runs and miss it after but for 95% of my use Ioniq 5 will make a lot of sense. Most of the listings in my area does have a markup. I wish Rivian would give a more accurate estimate I could count on and be transparent early if they plan to cut features that is not listed from Explore. The way R.J. was talking about supply chain issues, 2022 numbers and with geo political uncertainties, I expect at minimum 6 more months of delay (closer to 2024) by which time, inflation may make it harder for him to stick with the price guarantee and tax incentives may not be around. I wonder how much of a difference in timing it makes if I switch to R1T Adventure. If they update the website with their time estimate feature, it may help figuring things out a little. I know I am a bit all over the place this morning so don’t get sucked in to my web of confusion. I may have to use a spreadsheet with checkboxes. Good thing is that I really don’t “need” any of them right now. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

YEP! And I am an idiot because I just came from a heated VW Buzz thread!

Don't mind me, I'm scht00pid tonight (blame it on the alcohol) ?
Been known to happen, drinkin and typin. I got to ride in a Ford Lightning yesterday at a pop-up demo event. Very nice vehicle, but unknown about the off-road options. Seems to be the new family truckster.

I looked at and drove the Ioniq 5 thinking I might buy one while waiting on my R1S pre-order. For me two things stood out as advantages of the R1S -- size & range.

Seven seats is a plus for me and range over 300mi with AWD is a must. The Ioniq 5, as nice and replete with tech as it was, didn't meet my criteria.

One big plus is the availability of CarPlay && Android Auto. Edit: OP already mentioned this.

I have a Tesla MYP coming next month, will trade/sell when R1S here mid/late 2023. We have a reservation for BMW X5 45e and iX for my wife, not decided on which she is going to go with, coming late 22. Test drove the iX and the R1T, the iX sure is a brilliant luxury EV which my wife likes over the R1. For me, nothing to beat the R1S in terms of performance and practicality.

We did not like the other options out there. The EV6 interior is small, my head touches the roof. The Mach e we felt interior small too, same with Volvo 40. Audi etron, range is a bummer, though a real good suv, the 2023 is supposed to have a 350mile+ range, will be attractive when it does.

No problem. Better to blame it on the alcohol than the diesel! ?
