Has anyone had experience having Rivian deliver a vehicle to your home address (wherever that may be) but register it under a Montana LLC?

I'm considering going this route on my next new vehicle purchase b/c it is a significant savings compared to AZ sales tax and registration fees.

My local sales tax is just under 10%, and the yearly registration fees are based on the value of the vehicle. Using 80k as the price, in round numbers sales tax will be 8k, and the annual registration over 2000.

Montana allows you to set up an LLC, register the vehicle to that, no sales tax, no annual or otherwise inspections, registration is about 300/year. Costs about 1000 to set up and there are companies that will help you do so, remotely, no need to go there.

An example, have not used them (yet) and no affiliation:

Just wondering whether Rivian could handle something outside the norm.

A lot of Rental Car Exotics do this, and private owners, that dont want to deal with emissions. I know its possible, I just dont know directly how it works.

Too poor to pay taxes?

Sales taxes here are 13%, annual insurance & registration will be about $3000 due to value.

Seriously?

Oh, wait, you live in Canada, where you get health care and real government services instead of crazy "election audits." Duh.

I mean I wouldn’t want to give Ducey any money either but… Yes, seriously.

also seriously if you’re looking at registering in another state, Vermont is much easier.

Thanks for the helpful suggestion, but I'd rather make rational economic decisions. But of course, YMMV.
Just be aware that your “rational economic decision” will be considered criminal tax fraud in your home state of AZ. Unless the vehicle will be primarily used in the state of MT, what you are thinking of doing is a crime. And tax agencies across the country are finding ways to crack down on this.

That’s not to say lots of people don’t still do it, but that doesn’t make it not a crime. Good luck!

I know they are cracking down on CA residents who are using this MT LLC “loophole” to lower yearly vehicle registration costs. It used to popular with owners of exotic super cars. I don’t really see Montana plates here as much as I used to.

I thought about Vermont, but also thought that the vehicle had to be 15 years old if you were not a resident. If you've got info to the contrary, would love to hear it!

a friend did Vermont for a Japanese market MINI, but that car is 27 years old.

If you’re going to commit tax fraud, making the car 15 years older isn’t much of a stretch at that point.

Not tax fraud at all, perfectly legal. You may not like it, but that's a different discussion, and not the point of this thread or this forum

My question was does anyone have any experience with Rivian registering a vehicle to a Montana LLC. Clearly, you don't have that experience, but thank you for your moral indignation.

Carry on, eh?

Not even in the same zip code as a crime, but thank you for your legal analysis.

well, I didn’t know tax evasion was legal down there in Goldwater-land.

Rivian will probably register the vehicle wherever you want...in your name.

I know they are cracking down on CA residents who are using this MO LLC “loophole” to lower yearly vehicle registration costs. It used to popular with owners of exotic super cars. I don’t really see Montana plates here as much as I used to.
You don’t see it much anymore because there is now an annual luxury tax in Montana (now about 4 years old) for cars more than $150k MSRP. Oh yeah and it’s MT, not MO…that’s the show-me state.
