Questions: any concern about rattling with the way the charging pads are somewhat free moving? And secondly is there any concern the phone ball mount will leave any marks on the dash/wood over time?

No rattling whatsoever. It's trapped in there with the rubber mat on top of it.

The ball mount doesnt touch the wood at all. It's in the groove between the woof bits and that part is rounded off. It does have a good bit of contact with the back of the infotainment screen and some contact with right of the gauge console, but both of those bits are metal and the phone mount itself is just a medium strength plastic.

Just curious, is there any protection built into the pads in case some non-phone metallic object is placed on top by mistake?

Yes. The wireless charging pads are Qi Certified. The Qi standard includes a number of consumer safety precautions, including heat shielding and foreign object detection.

I would strongly suggest not ordering one until you have your Rivian. This is a very small batch and you would be taking one away from someone who could use it immediately.

So I ordered last night using Apple Pay. It shows the charge went through on Apple, but I did not receive any email saying it processed. Any way to check? Or am I good if the charge went through?
