Evidently 6awg Romex is not to code when pulling 48 amps continuous on a 60 amp breaker. Even though my electrician used it! Now I had to downgrade the charger to only pull 40 amps.Yea 40amp continuous would be ok even with 48 start up on 50 amp breaker, but not for EV chargers. The point made above is that the EV chargers have special guidance in the NEC because it is expect that they will be at max amps for continuous and because of that you can't exceed the 80% rule. Further issue is that when you get to 48 amps using the 80% rule... which requires a 60 amp breaker, you now have issues getting wired correctly to the unit because of the balance of temperature restrictions on romex, the max gauge wire size on most chargers (6 gauge), and conduit impacts on the temperature restrictions.
