I’m surprised that you and others paid in full for a vehicle that did not even reach its destination.
Yeah, this may have been a mistake on my part, but to be fair, it's not really clear in what order we are supposed to proceed. Once my steps opened up, it just looked to me to be a straight ladder - next step opens as soon as previous step is done.... so I just marched along. One step begets the next....... so I just proceeded assuming that since I had a VIN assigned, that I had a vehicle waiting.

Seriously, I don't get why people think they need to complete the 8 steps the second they open up. I've been sitting at 1/8 steps complete for 2 weeks now because the only step I could fully complete without a delivery date is Step 1.

but both my insurance agent and Rivian's said don't complete the policy until a delivery date is set. Rivian really should re-design the 8 steps to make it clear you don't need to complete all 7 in order to unlock the delivery date.

Well, you kind of answered your own question for me. My guide did not tell me not to complete my steps. On the contrary, I assumed Step 8 would open the second Step 7 was complete. I had no reason to think otherwise, so maybe this is my fault but...........

Rivian really should re-design the 8 steps to make it clear you don't need to complete all 7 in order to unlock the delivery date.
?This is the answer?

^ as someone who hasn't been blessed by the gods to have been assigned a guide yet or even better start the "Steps"... exactly which Steps do you need to complete in order to unlock your delivery date?
Once your steps open up, you get 8 steps on your app..... I rifled through them thinking it would open up my delivery date..... not sure it was wise.

Here is what my screen shows for my R1T on the app and the Rivian.com website:

You don't need to complete ANY steps to schedule a delivery date, you only need to complete all steps to experience your delivery date. So in a sense, Step 8 should really be Step 1.

I am the most patient and kind person I know, but being talked to like I’m either 5-years old, or as if I’m calling and asking for a free meal, is kinda frustrating. I’m simply asking for someone to call someone on my behalf and give me a realistic update on my timing. There’s no way someone doesn’t know exactly what’s going on with my truck.
Man, does this resonate with me. Ive bought and sold more than 50 new cars in the last 20 years (between mine, wife and kids) and Ive never experienced more of a 'you're a child, sit there shut up and wait' attitude than I have experienced with Rivian. Its a very expensive purchase, its a long time to wait, they are not Tesla (who can get away with this for other reasons) and they dont need to be treating people this way. A little transparency would go a long way with this company. Im to the point in my years' long wait of maybe going and buying something else. I dont want to buy another ICE truck, but I need one and a 3 year lease on an F150 hybrid is sounding good right about now.

@AmerikanMatt I don’t blame you for any of this. You followed the logical path based on what you were shown. It just happens that Rivian is not doing things correctly.
On the plus side, the rest of us gets to learn from stories like this because all of us have been patiently (or not) waiting for this truck/SUV for so long that it’d be hard to not fly through the steps hoping to finally be rewarded for such an incredibly long wait.

Thanks @AmerikanMatt and @DJG, both helpful posts.

Now I know I'll need to slow my roll when the time eventually comes to start the process.

TLDR, no anticipated communication by the end of the summer (Thursday, 9/22). Communication anticipated at end of September explaining another communication in October, presumably with delivery windows for those who haven't yet received updated windows.

Chatted with Rivian customer service today about delivery window/updated communications by the "end of the summer." This was their reply:

RIVIAN: We will also be sending an email with additional details towards the end of September so that you know what to expect with Octobers' delivery window communications. We appreciate your patience and thank you for staying open while we work to get these windows out as soon as possible.

ME: So again, to confirm, Tony's last communication was that the rest of the preorder holders were going to have our windows by the end of the summer (tomorrow). Instead of a communication coming by tomorrow, it's going to be the end of summer and instead of a specific window, it's another deferral to October for an actual window?

RIVIAN: This is an update to the previous announcement we've made, as we want to provide the best understanding on delivery with the announcements we've recently made for our configuration options. We will be sending your delivery window estimate in the coming weeks for your preorder.

I was sure you were trolling us. So they are going to miss both the date AND deliverable that they, themselves, set a few months ago. That is......wow. So much for their repeated promise to improve communications.

Rivian is lacking in the “meeting self-imposed deadlines” area so far but maybe they think they get bonus points for consistency. Right?
