Did Tony's AMA mention Max Pack at all?
A request for a Max Pack update was the fifth highest voted question submitted days before the AMA. It was ignored. Not a great sign.

At risk of being Old Man Who Shouts at Clouds … not a huge fan of everything-app-control. Especially the winch. There are technical ways to make it work when you’re far from cell service, but this is a case where real push controls are superior for many reasons - especially safety.

On a less rant-y note - if Rivian is going to go after the Overlanding market, they will need robust support of the aftermarket. Closed ecosystem is great for controlling the experience, but as a business, it’s incredibly hard to scale.

I do very much hope they embrace 3rd parties. Wheel options, storage options, winches, lights, roll cages … the whole works. There are ways to introduce this in a controlled, quality-assured fashion without owning the entire ecosystem, and I truly hope they go that route.
Yep, a winch needs a dedicated wireless remote and for the apparent design in the Rivian, it needs remote clutch/freewheel, so that narrows the selection to a WARN. The app would be tedious, the touchscreen would be a novelty.

What I was hoping to see Rivian deliver is their own motor and gearbox powered from the main ("traction") battery, not the 12V. This would be the EV equivalent of a PTO winch.

If they just built the carrier for a WARN 10S for example, that could hide under the radiator and presumably be a bolt-in aftermarket accessory. I don't think that would cost them sales of their own bespoke winch when they get around to it.

As for the aftermarket, Rivian has a few partners (tent, kitchen, racks, ppf) but the absence of a catalog of 100s of partners is a glaring omission from their business plan. Ford managed to copy Jeep and replicate the aftermarket catalog for the Bronco. It's a bit silly of Rivian to be printing its logo on "merch" instead of having their vehicle at trade and overland shows fully rigged with (prototype) aftermarket gear. I'd like them to take the (clumsy) fit out of the Rebelle Rally vehicles, the (impressive) fit out of the service vehicles and spec some useful upgrades (e.g. rear seat delete, subwoofer relocation, camp speaker relocation) and work with high end OEMs like SmartCap for a bed cap, WARN for an integrate winch, ARB for … everything … especially a fridge that fits the gear tunnel and a fridge that fits the frunk (maybe replacing the liner?)

The owner experience is a matter of quality aftermarket solutions. Jeep and Land Rover defined how to make a product last forever and have a loyal lifetime enthusiast population. All the aftermarket shops would love to have high dollar Rivian customers.

So many ways for Rivian to ask me for thousands of dollars and me happy to schedule the appointment to take my money! : )

Will most use it? probably not, but lots will want it.
I want it with the hope I will never have to use it. Same reason I'll keep a plug in electric chainsaw in the truck most of the time. Downed trees and/or zombie apocalypse.

So...non announcement to come...and stealth removal from website...got it.

You could actually do a hitch receiver type mount for your winch. It's easy then to hook up to the front or back of the truck, depending on how you got stuck or if you want to snatch someone out from behind you

wouldn’t be hard to fabricobble a receiver mount that bolts to front tow hook locations….

I have a front Bumper with a hitch receiver on it on my Land Rover for this reason. It’s also really nice for moving trailers around.

You would need to add a starting battery and a high amp battery charger. Pretty clumsy. Plus most people don't want to winch from the rear.

A realistically sized receiver winch would be 100lbs. Doable for many but not great.

I don't think Rivian is going after the overlanding market. They are going after the "I wish I could do big overloading trips" market. Plus electric isn't compatible with significant overlanding.

I doubt Rivian will do a 400V motor on a winch that could have a steel cable. I'll guess that the winch will have its own 24V power supply.

22 weeks and counting... I ask almost every time they post photos with with lights on "when we'll see how he's wired them in, and what he's using to control them"

100% an employee as the response is typical Rivian speak with a "Soon" tossed in for good measure.

No interest in the light bar, but I'm tempted to find that post just so I can comment the same. You have a link? ??

Good point. I'll counter that max pack order holders should get estimates at the end of the month. The better answer to all then "when" question would have been to wait a few weeks.

But if there are no Q1/Q2 2023 delivery dates given then I will assume max pack will slip to 2024. To further guess, if max pack wasn't doable until 2024, they would have cancelled the option.

It's already wacky that pricing given in 2020 (2019?) is honored in 2023

It is wacky which is why I think they're going pull a Camp Kitchen on the Max Pack. My $0.02 is on them announcing a redesign for the Max Pack to add enhancements like faster charging, it will be indefinitely delayed, no new price will be revealed, and they'll let those of us who preordered the Max Pack switch to Large or get a refund. An unpopular view, I know. I want to be wrong and I admit that I'm purely speculating in an information vacuum. But can we all agree that it's strange that nobody at Rivian has gone on record about the Max Pack since December 2021? Not one statement that I can find. For their flagship model that's supposed to start shipping in a few months, don't you think they would have said something by now? It's not like Tony doesn't have information about a model that supposed to start shipping next quarter. He chose not to respond. I don't know why but if you were at Rivian and your class leading Max Pack really was fully tested and ready to go, wouldn't you be talking it up?

IDK, we're all just chasing our tails at this point. Maybe we'll learn something at the end of the month but maybe not. They could add delivery timing estimates to our Rivian Account page and just post the same thing they sent us in June. "Hi SacramentoElectric, we added your delivery estimate for your Max Pack to your account page. It's still 2H 2023. No, we aren't going to tell you anything else about Max Pack. Best, Tony"

I look forward to eating my words and driving a Max Pack next year. Or it gets delayed until 2024, they don't sell it for pre-march prices, I switch to the R1S and give it to my wife, and hold out for my long range Cybertruck preorder in 2024.
