I will need a ramp in the future to load/unload a shipping container, and it occurs to me it might work on the R1T tailgate too. I've never examined a tailgate ramp for hand trucks, motorcycles, etc. - do they need anything special other than a lip to rest on the tailgate?

I'm considering something like this: https://www.discountramps.com/commercial/container-ramps/p/8K-GRIT-CNTRAMP/

I think they are too short. The board I was using to load a dirt bike in a K2500 p/u was closer to 7 feet otherwise the angle is too steep.

For my Tacoma I used a curved ramp to get my sportbike into the bed. Helped with loading/unloading for sure

I don’t know what the height of the lowered tailgate is but that ramp would be way too short. I think you could use something like one of these portable wheelchair ramps though. Definitely do the math on how steep the ramp would be. Too short and you will struggle to get a hand truck up the ramp without spilling everything. Longer = easier.

Great reminder of the needed length, thanks. I'm mostly curious about how it rests on the tailgate. Sounds like nothing fancy is expected.

Depending on what type of hand truck you will be using (appliance vs box) you would want to know how wide it is. I have never used one of those motor sports ramps but one track seems like it would be too narrow for a hand truck.

You will also be thankful for the little edge bumpers. Nothing worse than trying to get a heavy hand truck up a ramp and having 1 wheel go off the side.. other than slipping on the aluminum ramp while moving furniture in the middle of a CO winter:asshat:

Good thing I'm not moving to Colorado! I don't know if I could afford the PPF and yearly replacement windshields, much less the health care premiums for all my slipping injuries. Unless you're a libertarian why would you live there?! ;)

I‘m not, but there’s truth to that! I have the glass coverage added to my auto insurance so it only costs me $100 to get my windshield replaced. I do my best to make each one last at least 2 years, but if I get a crack right in my field of vision I just get a new one….

It’s funny the stuff we put up with when we are young and clueless/ poor. I didn’t know what PPF was when I was younger so I didn’t care if I had it on my junker or not. I just went about my business… Now I am spending $1500 extra to protect an $80k truck. ??‍♂

Ice on the ramp is one thing, but from my experience the raw aluminum gets pretty slick just being wet, even with those traction ribs they come with. If it has that traction tape added it is much better. When it’s cold out it just hurts more when you fall☹

I'd be worried about resting the ramp on the plastic molding of the tailgate. Just pushing it to close the tailgate feels like it's going to fall off. I hope I'm wrong. On other pickup trucks the plastic edge is covering the metal frame of the tailgate but it feels like on the R1T it's just snapped on top of the metal tailgate rather than wrapping over it.

For loading/unloading a container and using it on the R1T tailgate, you just need a ramp with a sturdy lip that rests securely on the tailgate. Most ramps for hand trucks or motorcycles should have that, but make sure it’s built for the weight you're working with. If you’re looking for something durable, I came across ramps nz that are specifically designed for container loading, and they seem pretty reliable for heavier loads too.

My ramps came with straps to link back to the hitch so they don't kick out from the tailgate in use. Wouldn't be needed on your container but a good safety feature for the truck.
