Seriously though, glad to see the four major islands are so well covered. The Big Island and Kauai would be especially fantastic places for either of the Rivians. Your dad will be a happy man!

Is he a pre-order holder for a Rivian, and if so, what is he going with?

It’s not hard to get trucks there, a lot of time it’s cheaper to buy here in CA then send($1500) out there.

My dad is semi retired, lives in Hawaii, but his construction company is here in California. Pre COVID he would fly back to CA every other month or so to take care of work stuff. He keeps a car(Nero plug-in) at my house in CA for when he’s in town.

He hedged his bets and preordered the CT and R1t the day they announced the CT. He isn’t getting LE, couldn’t justify the extra money and mostly wanted wait and see how things go for a new company. Current plan is to have it replace the Kia for his CA/work truck( got to love the EV and 179 tax write offs). Then in a few years send it to Hawaii depending how he likes going full electric.

While this is a much larger announcement than I was expecting it still looks like the Texas pan handle looks like a lonely place to be in a Rivian. I just got back from a spring break road trip (from Austin) to the Grand Canyon via a long route up through Durango, Cortez, Mexican Hat, Page, and Flagstaff. Taking mental notes along the way I was already a bit concerned about the charging between Sweetwater, TX and Santa Rosa, NM. Unfortunately after this announcement it appears that is still going to be an issue for a while.

I agree. I don't have an electric car yet, but I've been planning routes based on where I go, and frequently go through Lubbock. I feel like a DCFC in Lubbock would bridge Sweetwater and NM pretty comfortably. It's the first place I looked on this map haha

Exactly, when leaving Texas via that route I tend to try and make it to Santa Rosa when I’m outbound for the first night. On the way home I usually have a stop over in Lubbock. This past week was no different. EA has a charger in Sweetwater and Santa Rosa. But that 331 mile drive is just a bit long even with the 400 mile pack.

It sounds like your dad has life dialed in. FYI, I was kidding a bit about getting to Hawaii, you know...with no charging stations from here to there, but the Big Island appeals to me way more than the others do.

Part of that is because of the size, but also its fairly small population and relatively undeveloped nature. It seems wide open and uncrowded. All of the islands are special, but the combination the Kona area, the Hilo side of things, and all of the current volcanic activity just makes it very appealing.

Here is an overlay of the RAN locations (rough as they are) overlaid on the Colorado map with the Colorado state park locations where the L2 chargers were reported by the Colorado Sun earlier today. It's clear to me that they are two different networks.

Note these places in particular:
- In the Steamboat area, there are NO RAN stations, likely because this area is more of a destination as opposed to a passthrough. To be sure, I'd love a RAN charger there (c'mon Rivian!) but could get by with the chargers that are already there.

- On the contrary, note the two RAN stations on the I-70 corridor heading to/from Kansas. These are purely passthrough locations (no offense to anyone who lives in that area!) and therefore anything less than a DCFC would not make sense there.

- In Grand Junction, there is one state park called Corn Lake, but it is at the southern end of the city. There would be no reason for Rivian to put in a DCFC in that location. They would instead put it near the freeway in Grand Junction to the north. (Hence these are two different stations IMO.)

Generally speaking, the Green Diamonds are on the freeways going north/south and east/west. Technically, there are 22 green diamonds that fall in Colorado (and 24 state parks). So, clearly the Rivian announcement is not double counting them.

Salina KS. - Here we already have a 4 stall EA location and a large Supercharger stop. Now RAN maybe. The more the merrier!

There is only one color, Launch Green. All Rivians are Launch Green. If you don't see that, then you need to get your eyes checked (or maybe I do).

That is what he likes about The big island. Size of LA with only 200k people. I lived there for a year when I was 25, the cultural shock between LA and Kona was to much for me.

The map that's listed is very tough to follow without the roadways. My best guess from looking at it is that the non-interstate Idaho locations include Sun Valley, Salmon, Bear Lake, Sand Point, and Bonners Ferry, with maybe West Yellowstone, Dell and Superior, Montana along the shared border with Idaho. The interstat-based chargers looked to be in Boise, Mountain Home, Twin Falls, Pocatello, and Idaho Falls.

If those are correct, I think stations in Salmon and around Bear Lake will really be a big plus. I expected Sun Valley, but anything else off of the major routes really helps to open it up and reduce the range anxiety. Throw in few campgrounds with 14-50 plugs and we can get about safely. What map are you looking at? I think we are looking at different ones. Lol. The only locations I saw were along the interstate and then going up to (I presume) sandpoint.

Looks like they’ve got the interstates covered, but yeah there is a gap in the central part. Glad to see one in West Yellowstone, since that’s needed in order for me to take the shortest (and most scenic) route to MT. I also notice two that appear to be inside YNP. Tesla couldn’t even pull that off! I’m impressed. That’ll be the first DCFC inside the park!
