Calling all R1T roof tent owners

Hi all,

I appreciate this time of year is not when most folks are thinking about camping but I wanted to get in touch with those who did get hold of the Yakima tent for their R1T.

I had a tent configured before it got canned and I'm still keen to get one. By the looks of things, the one Rivian was selling is basically a Yakima SkyRise ( https://yakima.com/collections/rooftop-tents) with a bit of branding.

What has been your experience with the roof tents and should I just go out and buy a tent direct from Yakima??

A RTT is a RTT pretty much. Decide whether you want a hard shell or soft shell tent and then decide how much you want to pay for one.

I have a skyrise. I got it because it waS a good deal. If that wasn’t a factor, I’d get an iKamper or Smittybilt.

Pay attention to "footprint" size since the R1T bed is fairly narrow and for sure short front-to-rear. I put an Ironman4x4 tent on mine. Got it during a 25% off deal. Very nice quality for the price.

Is that the 1300? The 1400 looks like it would be way too long for an R1T.

I don’t think Rivian actually sold any tents to R1T owners. I think legally they can’t as OE because it blocks the tail light which they said the plan to resolve with a tail light accessory.

I was very happy with my IKamper X-Cover 2.0 mini, works perfectly on the R1T out of the box. My thread on it here.

If you want to go all in … AluCab, Autohome, James Baroud are all well respected in overland circles. The Yakima/Thule are pretty light weight and more occasional use, which might be fine depending on need.

It ‘was’ in reference to my use over last summer. Still own it but not currently on my truck and I expect to replace it with a different (more winter friendly) solution sOOn.

IMO, the hard shell convenience is worth the extra coin… the Skycamper Mini is a perfect fit for the R1T bed.
