For those who got R1S (or R1T) at original approximately $78k would you buy one for new price of approximately $93k?

I’ve had mine for two days. Would I pay post March prices? Yes.

But I’d be a little disappointed in the Driver Assists’ ability to keep centered when the line goes away due to off ramps and on ramps. For 90k I’d expect the bugs to be worked out. As a pre March price payer, I knew there would be issues and accept them as an early adopter. With forums, FB pages and YT videos it feels like Rivian has been around for a long time, but the only started delivering to Joe Public within the last 12 months.

If someone doesn’t think the “value” is there because of bugs and glitches, wait for the facelift or next model when the bugs have been worked out

Died of old age during the wait
Once I got to a place in life when I could actually afford an expensive vehicle it sort of lost appeal for me. We locked into an LE for just under $75 and I had nearly a couple of years to convince myself that it was worth the price. When the price increase was announced I decided to stick it out because I had already waited a long time. When they agreed to honor the original pricing it made it easier for me to stick with the plan. While I can afford the increased price there's a part of me that just can't see spending $90K+ on a car. I think the car is still priced fairly at the higher amount but it's just more than I care to spend on something that loses value over time.
I feel this. Using traditional budgeting guidelines, I shouldn't blink at buying this at either the old or new price. But I've never spent more than $45k on a car and I still wince at that extravagance 12 years later. How do I justify the R1S? I tell myself to think of the fuel savings, and also write this off as a one-time midlife crisis-mobile. But I don't think I could hold my nose and write the check at 95+k.

I got it at pre-launch price. I had ordered Max but reluctantly converted to Large pack.
I like it a lot. I make a very good living and while I have been a car buff since I was a kid, I never felt like I would spend "a lot" of money on a car even though I appreciate them...I'd rather go on expensive adventure vacations, for example. But given the launch pricing, the gas savings, the EV credit and the quality of the vehicle, I think it was a steal at the pre-launch pricing. The current $100k with no credit sounds like a lot of money for me to spend on a car, but I was driving a 12 year old 4runner before this. In the end though, a reason I'm really happy with my R1T is that in my particular case, I wouldn't have wanted any other pickup. A regular midsize is too small and has no room in the back seats or storage. A full size is just too damn big to drive around town and for parking, IMO. Throw in the awesome performance and very solid tech features (remember, coming from a 2010 4Runner), I think it's a pretty awesome vehicle such that if $100k is in your budget and it fits what you're looking for out of vehicle like the R1T did for me, it's a great purchase.

I was a pre-March order holder. I cancelled my order.

Many can never say for sure if they wouldn't because they weren't actually faced with that choice to make. Easy to say no now. But would you really have passed on the opportunity to own the most unique truck or SUV on the road, especially as it relates to a truck? Many say no, but might have actually done it when the time came.

For me, I was more pissed off that they would do such a thing and wouldn't support that type of behavior. I couldn't support a company that would allow you to commit at a particular price, then jack it up at the last minute by a large margin. When they reversed course a couple of days later, I had my order re-instated. I think a lot of people cancelled immediately, which led to the immediate 180 by Rivian.

Personally, I think the $70+/- was a good price point for what it is. But, then again, what are your other options? Especially if you want a true off-road capable vehicle. If you will never go off-road and just want an SUV, then there are a few other lower priced options, like the Cadillac, Jaguar, Audi. The Caddy looks like the best bargain out there. Seems to be a lot vehicle for the price.

Any similarly equipped trucks are pushing $90,000, including the Ford and soon to arrive Chevy. They are bigger. The Ford isn't remotely worth over $70k in my mind. The Silverado offers a lot more and a $90k price point might be more reasonable. With both, you can get cheaper versions of them as well.

Chevy has the Blazer coming.

For me, I could afford the $90K price tag, but probably would have still declined just on price alone and gone with the Caddy. I have one of those on order and look forward to getting my hands on it. If it's as nice as it appears to be in real life, might consider keeping it.

I'd be hard pressed to purchase my truck again at today's price. Its a great vehicle, but there are some features I would expect on a $100k truck, like heads up display or better interior storage like mentioned before.

The real factor would be the service platform. I've never owned any vehicle that required so much work from me to have it serviced. From reporting an issue, to the constant calls to check status, waiting 7-8 hours for the tow truck or mobile tech, to lining up alternative transportation while the truck is being serviced. Rivian seems to think I have nothing in life but to cater to their needs and time table. No sense of concern over being prompt or respect for my time. If I lived close to a service center, my answer may be different. The service platform is my number one drawback.

Large jumps in inflation have that affect on people. As a middle aged person, I’m close to maxing out my yearly earning potential. That makes spending 80k a huge amount. But much like your parents or grandparents would never consider spending 10k on a vehicle, your comfort level is 45k, the kids behind us think that 65k for a pick up is normal. Times change and so does the purchasing power of a dollar

I am pretty unhappy with the cabin/road noise, performance in snow/ice, range/efficiency, charging network, lack of snow tires for 21" wheels, seat comfort, Driver+, heat loss from the panoramic roof, lack.of bi-directional charging, and weight of the vehicle.
You should have known about all these things before you bought the truck?

That's like going to an Asian restaurant and being unhappy they don't have Fried Chicken.

Efficiency can change (e.g. most recent update added several miles to range), I'll grant you the weight of the truck.

What is unique about the chemistry of Rivian batteries that prevents bi-directional charging?

All of the other items on my list are failures of Rivian to execute against their branded image of an adventure vehicle/experience. Currently, most of the 'adventure' owners are experiencing is range anxiety and broken EVgo/EA chargers.

The OP asked if we would buy an R1S at post-March prices. I gave a set of reasons why I wouldn't.

No. I am retired and can't take full advantage of the outdoor prowess of the R1. I thought it would be great to have something that outperformed all the cars of my youth. I test drove the Y preperformance and got motion sickness. Now I imagine driving in Southern Cal in snow mode. I just went skiing in Mammoth but I think it's my last time. I though that 5 years ago and 10 years ago. I have had many motorcycles, now I like quiet. The R1S was noisy to me. Still above ground. I am going to try and enjoy the R1S even if I have no place to go. I have had a good run, no complaints. See you on the trail.

Buddy, if you can't be arsed to read the manual, what do you expect? Rivian has supported this since release.

How is someone supposed to know about cabin noise or seat comfort before they buy if they can't get a test drive? Or the winter performance, they only started mainly delivering in March, after the winter? And although there is a lot written online about a charging network, most don't pay attention until they run into a problem (not to mention, how many stations does RAN have, seven ?)

Go back and reread my post. See the bold italics in their quited post? That was my attempt to indicate what i was referring to.

No they haven’t. They support lane keep assist, which ping-pongs within the lane. That is not lane centering.

Maybe you should RTFM.

Fair enough, I didn't notice the italics in what you quoted. I agree, most of those in italics weren't exactly secrets. I think some people got caught up in the efficiency videos from youtubers, assuming they could match those numbers, not realizing long drives may be needed to match those numbers, or failing to realize youtubers are posting videos that are impressive because they are impressive, no one wants to watch a video with typical efficiency driving 10 miles.
