Those arguments were always nonsense. Any suggestion from Amazon to not use a competitors product would be against the law. Granted that hasn't stopped companies in the past but I see very little benefit to Amazon by keeping AA/CP out of the Rivian so why risk it?
What law would they be in violation of by suggesting to Rivian that they don't use a competitors product?

What law would be violated if they'd built that into contracts with Rivian?

None that I'm aware of...

Anti-trust laws. Anticompetitive requirements to use partner products is illegal.

Example: Google search and they only had preferential placement.

And you didn't rush here and immediately tell us???? /s
Honestly I struggled with posting it at all. I can't imagine the rep was supposed to divulge that kind of news and if they wanted to I'm sure Rivian could track down the rep and reprimand them

When the CarPlay discussions came up last year, I wasn't really thinking about it. I never had it and I usually just listen to Bluetooth music in the car. Then, with the R1S delivery being unpredictable and a teen that hit a deer (they are ok, just the vehicle was damaged), we picked up a 2020 BMW X3. CarPlay in that vehicle is really quite nice. I see why people are desiring it in the Rivian.

It won't break me to not have it, but it really is pretty nice to have. Maybe by October, it will already be in the software for a delivery!

Totally off topic, but who adds all the graphics to each thread, the moderators?

I'm the OP and it sure wasn't me so I can only assume the mods. It's just amazing how much interest there is in CP. Look at how quickly this thread has blown up.

That would require Rivian to be using an Amazon product in place of CP/AA, no? They are not doing so, therefor there's no anti-trust applicability here, from my understanding of how those laws apply.

You can certainly place a 'not allowed to use X vendor's products' into a contract. There is nothing that prohibits that.

You are right though, if Amazon said 'You must use Amazon Car Thingy That I Can't Remember The Name Of and you cannot use Apple CarPlay', then anti-trust might come into play. Even then, looking around at the tech landscape, I'm not sure anti-trust laws have enough teeth or prosecutorial impetus to even matter here. I also don't believe Amazon has said anything of this sort to Rivian.

Yeah, it must be the moderators, personally I could do without the glorified graphics.

I agree, this thread is blowing up fast.

I agree for instance that it is unlikely that they would apply these laws to Amazon since they are not in a dominate market position. I assure you though that any contract that states you can't use any competitors products is subject to antitrust review, there may be loopholes as I'm not an attorney but it has been been prosecuted many times.

Example 2: Apple suppressing competitors in it's own app store
Example 3: Intel giving rebates to computer makers not to sell AMD based products

With renewed support should we all flood customer service for them to support Android Auto and Apple Car Play?

Yea, I think it all comes down to the fact that Rivian isn't using an Amazon UI/Infotainment in place of AA/CP. Since all 3 are third parties, I believe Amazon would have some contractual room to make stipulations, tho those would likely only apply to the EDVs they contracted for.

However, requiring those via contract to not integrate with AA/CP would likely have the same effect of trying to enforce that for all Rivian vehicles. It would at least delay investment in the integration, if not kill it off entirely.

Not saying that happened, but it's one avenue I can think of that Amazon could have put their stamp on how this all happens without risking running afoul of antitrust laws.

Um...As long as Jeff Bezos owns 18% of Rivian, there is 0 chance AA/CP gets implemented.

I'd expect an Amazon Alexa clone to be implemented before AA/CP.

If this is true, just wait until RJ finds out about this leak and who leaked this - things are really going to blow up inside Rivian!

Rivian has been outspoken about delivering a better experience by providing their own solution. But I have to wonder if they underestimated the effort required to develop and maintain their solution and are now reconsidering that position?
