Today I experienced strange behavior when reversing my R1T. Normally the throttle is pretty touchy and if you let off the gas it brakes (regens) pretty hard. It's super sensitive but I've mastered it after 8 months and 10k miles.

Today, I let off the gas and there was no braking, it actually kept going as if I was applying throttle. Was pretty scary and I had to press on the brakes before crashing into another car.

Vehicle was 55% charged and it was 90 degrees out so it's not a matter of high SoC and cold weather disabling regen. Wondering if anybody had experienced a runaway throttle type of situation with their Rivian.

I parked and inspected the gas pedal and didn't see anything that would be causing it to get stuck.

Sounds scary and glad everyone and everything is okay, but I don’t think our cars have “gas” pedals.

My first thought was regen was limited due to high SOC but at 55% that’s clearly not the case as you realized. I can’t imagine you accidentally enabled cruise control?

Hope it doesn’t happen again.

I wonder if cruise control works in reverse. Will need to try that! But I think it would priority switching to drive or neutral from reverse before going into cruise control.

If you have the approx time of day, you can call RIVIAN5 and have them check the vehicle logs. Perhaps there was a system error or other fault. I think it's also possible to press and hold the hazard button (or some combination of buttons) to record a checkpoint in the vehicle logs for later diagnosis.
Please update here when you find out what happened.

Given the ramifications, I doubt Rivian would disclose/admit to such a thing.

Press and hold your driver profile icon and name at the top of the screen for like 10 seconds to get a diag log capture/flag in your event log. There will be a small window that pops up on the top of your main display and give you a checkmark and says it was captured.

Rivian5 told me this last week when I called about something. They advised this will give them a point in time to reference when they go back to find something.

But to @CommodoreAmiga's point, you probably wont hear anything definitive back.

You can hold the same two buttons you do for a hard reset. Before the truck resets it will say diagnostic snapshot captured.

Thank you all for these tips. I'll perform these steps and then reach out to Rivian.

ATL_R1S, thank you for the nitpicking. Your contribution was extremely valuable here.

Also, holding the hazard button will do the same without a reset.

This has also happened to myself 3 or 4 times. One of the times it launched me into the street. I've made a complaint and to no surprise Rivian Bellevue SC told me it's me.

This also happened to another person in the Seattle area which caused them to hit their house. Same complaint of car not stopping in reverse or accelerating. Rivian worked up a report which blamed the drive for going 100% throttle. Rivian fully blamed the operator so be careful. Rivian will manipulate the data to make sure they have a favorable outcome......

Actually they blamed a driver this happened to. Instead of actually looking into the issue they blew it off. I also filed a ticket on this and they proceeded to ghost me on every attempt to get more data.

Edit: this was Bellevue

Seems like a highly controversial statement that’s anecdotal. Reaching this conclusion is not trivial and looking at vehicle log data would yield facts. I find it hard to believe Rivian would willfully make a false claim and mislead customers to avoid a safety issue and potential recall.

I’m sure we can point to evidence from the big 3 where this has occurred in decades past. Seems Rivian is holding itself accountable with 2 safety recalls for other things.

Every manufacturer gets complaints like this. Have any of them been confirmed? My impression is that they are universally, for all manufacturers, either:
1) driver error, or
2) mechanical issue (stuck/obstructed pedal).

did this occur on any kind of incline? I have experienced some odd behavior when stopping or backing down a pretty steep incline where the truck isn’t sure if it should continue rolling to a stop with regen or go into hold, I’ve even had it rock back and forth. The friction brake always gets it to stop and hold for me.
