I didn't even know that was a thing. Great question.

Some states require a spare to be included such as Maryland (https://govt.westlaw.com/mdc/Docume...ype=CategoryPageItem&contextData=(sc.Default))

Is Rivian including spares for vehicles sold in these states? If not, how are they getting around this?
From the link:
If a new Class A (passenger) or Class M (multipurpose) motor vehicle is sold in this State, the manufacturer shall equip the motor vehicle with a spare tire that conforms with the requirements in § 22-405 of this subtitle, unless:
(1) The tire-wheel system of the motor vehicle provides a run-flat capability by which a partially inflated driving surface becomes available in the event of a tire failure;
(2) The motor vehicle is equipped with a factory-installed temporary tire repair and inflation system; or
(3) Technological improvements, consistent with applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards, become available.
Pretty sure both the R1T and R1S include an onboard "inflation system" and patch kit.

I seem to recall some verbiage from Rivian a long while back regarding this. They said where required by law, a spare would be included (I assume added automatically to your configuration). Otherwise spare tires would be available to purchase.

I don't think they're actually "selling" vehicles in most states, they're just delivering them there. That's why you have to send payment to CA.

This is the escape clause. Pretty much all manufacturers not shipping with a spare include a flat-repair kit unless using run-flats which Rivian is not using.

^^^This. The R1 vehicles come with the air compressor and repair kit.

Related Personal Anecdote: I sadly got a screw through the top edge of my rear passenger tire after only 10 days of ownership. Because the Pirellis are specific to Rivian I’m still waiting for Tire Rack to deliver my replacement tire four days later, but luckily it’s only a slow leak and the air compressor has been a god send to fill the tire up when it gets low.

Has anyone actually had to use the sealant and procedure provided by Rivian? It involves removing the valve stem and reinstalling after you dump in the sealant. Doesn’t seem like a pleasant experience on a dark and stormy night.

On a dark and stormy night, I'd call roadside assistance.

If you have access to the Rivian Stories site, there is a person talking about using it. Search for tire repair.

Some cars don't even have spare capabilities (IE: Leaf). I mean I suppose you could buy a wheel/tire and toss it in the back seat.

Looks like they patched it in this case with a plug after getting to their destination. I’m curious if anyone has had to pull the valve stem and use the factory sealant roadside.

By now the tire is flat and I really don't know what I am going to do. I pulled out the air hose kit thinking I might try to put some air in the tire just to limp it to a parking lot... Inside the air host kit was the tire repair sealant kit. I didn't think there was much chance the kit would work on a large puncture but I didn't have any options. So I took out the valve stem, added the sealant and put it all back together.

I then attempted to add air...

I got it up to about 21 PSI and could still hear the air escaping out of the hole but I decided that was enough air to slowly run the tire to coat the inside with the sealant so I disconnected the hose and drove a couple hundred feet coating the tire thoroughly. When I go out to check I could not hear air escaping so I connected the air hose and within a few minutes had the pressure back up to 50 PSI and holding....

While I am not terribly happy about not having a spare, and getting a tire basically ruined.... The Tire sealant Got Me Home...

Thanks. That’s a different thread than the one I was reading. Good to know it worked in this case.

Thanks for the info. Good to know that there is atleast something available to limp a few miles in the event of a flat.
