DIY temporary tonneau / bed cover?

This is essentially what I did. When they tried to fix my tonneau and it didn’t work, I asked them to remove the end caps. They never had before, but said it was pretty easy. I forgot how it connects now but I seem to remember just a few fasteners?

These are the caps that need to be removed in order for you to use a manual cover in a truck with an electric cover. Keep in mind that this requires you to lift up the top trim which frequently causes some of the clips to break.

I got tired of the Maverick cover being janked together and returned it. I went the vinyl fencing route instead - to my surprise 9 panels fit perfect with no trimming required (aside from the ends). I also took out the rubber weatherstripping from the tonneau rail slot which made it super easy to slide the panels in.

Do you mind sharing the link to the exact vinyl fence you purchased? As well as any modifications you had to do to get it to fit?

Mine didn’t come with top and bottom rails, just the panels. To make it fit I cut the boards to size (54.5 I think?) first. On each end I used tin snips to make two straight cuts in each slat and twisted the remaining part of the slat with needle nose pliers to separate it. This lets the end be crushed to fit into the rails. I didn’t use tape or anything either. I’ll grab a picture tomorrow if that’s not clear

I think I did cut too deep into the panels though, it’s definitely not water tight and there are some gaps near the ends while installed because the channel was removed. But, no issue for me since I never expect the bed to be water tight.

This batch that yours is in would have been out a lot sooner, but I ran into trouble with my CNC and spent a little over a week just working through that. Murphy’s law I suppose. Thanks for your patience!
