As expected, the answer from Rivian support was most UNSATISFYING to my question of the effect on changing my configuration to 22" Dark wheels and dropping the Reinforced Body Shield now:
It would likely impact that delivery window, yes. we aren't sure if it would be delaying the order or improving the timing because because what is really happening there is your vehicle would likely then be coming from a different batch on the schedule, since these batches are preplanned in production
Rivian seems to be recalculating the build queue every quarter now with the way they are doing estimate updates. I wouldn't make any changes now. All of the trucks that end up in the shop are either from people cancelling, taking a different vehicle out of the R1 shop, or making changes to their build after the queue was created. I would just sit tight and expect to hear sometime soon about it if you have a july+ delivery time.

I was patient until my I found out about that the guy in my building at work his nearly identical R1S despite his preorder date 3 months after mine and that he changed his configuration 6 weeks ago! SMH Now, I'm just pissed and can no longer be a Rivian apologist. Their preorder/delivery process is just utter B.S.
3mos is negligible. Sounds like he changed config in a window of opportunity before delivery dates were updated. You changing now will most certainly push you out.

What did the conversation go like when you did your drive? I chatted with the rep doing the first mile drive for about 5 minutes before even looking at the car and one of the things we talked about was my flexibility with configuration, not needing to trade in or finance, and getting on the lead list. After the drive he went through a string of questions on his iPad filling out my a bunch of different questions and attached it to my order number.
Again, as I feared at the end of their business day, there was no major conversation about flexibility of my configuration nor financing, trade ins, lead list, etc. nor any follow up questions. The ONLY iPad interaction I had was signing the test drive waiver.

I know it won’t make you feel any better but I’m also a 3/21 preorder without a guide or shop access. I have asked with the typical response and they made a “note” on my account that I’m willing to travel to a number of service centers to expedite my delivery. I’m in FL about 100 miles from Orlando SC so perhaps they are waiting for the Tampa SC to open?

It’s anyone’s guess at this point. I also have dark 22s and NO underbody shield configured.

And, again, most UNSATISFYING final reply from my Rivian support chat just now:
we would recommend you leave the order as is since we can't guarantee that it would improve your timing to make that change. I think the reinforced underbody shield is more commonly chosen along with the 20 inch wheel/tires so it may logically make sense to add that option, but we wouldnt have a new delivery timing estimate for you until the end of july in that case

I CLEARLY told him that my CURRENT configuration was reinforced underbody and 20 inch wheel/tires and asked him what if I changed my configuration FROM those options to NO reinforced underbody shield and 22" wheels? SMH

Sorry, but so far my Rivian customer experience SUCKS! SMH

I feel your pain on this one. It’s not fair, but I suspect it’s dependent on you understanding the game and bringing it up during the 1st drive event.

You could go to another event and bring it up, or go by the service center and talk to someone there. I’ve found customer service to he pretty useless as they are not empowered to assign guides or vehicles.

Only you can decide if being first on the block with an R1S is worth the importance you’re assigning to it. My suggestion? Relax and get the truck you want—it’ll be worth it.

A good friend of mine moved YEARS ahead on both waitlists by politely and regularly courting Rivian customer service and offering extreme flexibility with his configuration. There is nothing wrong with that, but I wanted what I wanted, so just got an 8/19 R1S delivered. If you’re coming up for a 2021 R1S reservation now, your NYC location has probably moved you ahead of hundreds if not thousands of other earlier reservations who live further from a distribution center. Enjoy that little bit, and then invite your “buddy” update for some rock crawling and let him sweat his missing underbody shield and pretty city wheels.

I switched my order from R1S to R1T. Within hours I got assigned to "confirm configuration " and a guide, then VIN several days later. For adventure, R1T is better for me. 5 seats are more than enough for a trip.
sometime a change is a good trigger. Maybe it popped up on a guide's screen. ( in my case, she told me that because I didn't order tonneau. They just have one R1T without tonneau match me up.)

No need to be envious or upset.
We’re all on the same boat.
Our delivery estimate was June July. Then a few days later we got shop access with no inventory. Then 3 days later I sent a text to our guide about no longer having access and he replied he had matched us to a VIN.
It’s a fun lottery. We've been waiting for 2 more years than you have.
You’ll be okay it’s just a car.

FWIW, I was a 1/21 preorder and got shop access a few weeks ago. I was lucky enough to find a match yesterday. I upgraded in a sense, it was my exact configuration (Red/20" Bright) but it had the RUS so I took it. My point is that you should be getting shop access s00n. I did not push for shop access, but I was proactive at my First Mile telling them I was flexible on config and interested in factory pickup. They made a note on my account - did that help? Dunno....

Yes, they are making a few mistakes in managing the process. But specific to you, we know that wheels have been a constraint in the past, and that may have been the difference between your co-worker. It's also a bit odd that a bunch of RUS vehicles popped in yesterday - almost like they were built previously and waiting for backordered RUS to arrive at the factory? PURE SPECULATION on my part....

Be patient - it will be worth it.

IF I knew all this information BEFORE my 1st drive, then certainly I would have asked but considering the 1st drive confirmation email had the following disclaimer, I was just following directions per Rivian:

The vehicle you’ll be driving is not for sale and Rivian may not be able to discuss the sales process or financing during your appointment depending on state law.
Once again, PISS POOR customer service AFAIC!

Should probably just cancel and go with one of the alternative companies that will treat you better.

Being the *first one on the block* has nothing to do w/ my ire. I've seen 2 other R1S and plenty of other R1Ts around here but I always gave Rivian the benefit of doubt that they preordered theirs BEFORE me, but then to find out that someone preordered theirs 3 months AFTER me and then changed his configuration, Rivian customer service is indefensible!

With all due respect, obviously I'm NOT in the same boat since I don't have a guide and I wasn't upset until I found someone who obviously jumped ahead in the queue.
