One thing I REALLY like about Rivian is where they put the charge port - no need to back in. I also love that it's a true SUV and the third row is usable. I tried to get into the third row of a Y and practically threw out my back and my head hit the window and my knees died. ? X third row is better but trunk space is useless with it up and it's not a true SUV. And Rivian has a powered frunk!

Oh and the 110 plug and air compressor... I could go on... haha... Rivian really knows how to design a useful vehicle.

The Venice hub is a great place to see the vehicles, but you can’t drive them there. You can sign up online for a demo drive. https://rivian.com/
The demo drive might be an R1T, but at least you’d get to drive one.

One thing that is very important for you to know about both the R1S and R1T is that they are very tall vehicles - especially relative to your Nissan Leaf.

I applaud you for having been electric for so long. I've been electric ever since the BMW i3 was released so I've spent the better part of a decade driving that and when I got into the R1S/R1T I was shocked at how high off the ground they are.

I'm 6'5 but the rest of my family is not and they complained during our test drives (I had each vehicle for a week) that the height - even in "Kneel Mode" was annoying.

Not a deal breaker by any stretch but something you and your wife should be aware of especially if she is going to be driving the vehicle.

The other thing with the R1S that I was surprised about (relative to the R1T) is how loud it is. The compressor in the R1S is in the cabin space vs. the bed in the R1T so any time there are suspension adjustments - and there seem to be many of them in the R1S - you hear that compressor.

I believe that Rivian is addressing this though moving forward by using quieter compressors.

Finally - I would encourage you to contact your insurance company and ask about what adding an R1S would do to your premium. It doubled mine from my i3s when I called to inquire. Again, not a dealbreaker per say, but something to be prepared for.

Interesting. I'm 5'11 and my wife is 6'. My Leaf is higher up than a model 3.... Seems very low when I try to get into that car which I'm not a huge fan of. I'll head down to the Rivian hub soon to check it out.

I've seen a bunch of R1Ts around and R1Ss but not recently for some reason.

Thanks for your detailed write-up!

I found the Model 3 to be undrivable because of how low to the ground it was - that and I barely could get myself wedged into the seat.

I have heard talk of Rivian maybe offering running boards as a factory option for the R1T/R1S and I think there is at least 1 aftermarket option out there so there are solutions if it turns out to be an issue.

I will say this. I loved both the R1S/R1T but many of the things people get excited about, especially around the driving dynamics are not all that new to those of us who have been driving EVs. The instant torque, regenerative braking, being just a few. I was impressed with the handling (especially the R1T) for the size of vehicle and the high build and interior quality.

Especially compared to the spartan interior of the Model 3/Y.

Also the 3rd row in the R1S is actually useful! Believe it or not, I fit back there! I was not comfortable for an extended trip, but I was shocked at how much room there was for both my legs and width wise. I would say an adult 6 foot or below or a kid below that height would be able to sit back there for a road trip.

New builds, I believe as of Feb/Mar 2023, have upgraded air compressors for near silent suspension adjustments
Also if you do not drive in auto ride height you rarely hear the compressor kick on.

As a side note, I have heard people say it is loud, I can hear it when it is on but would not call it loud, maybe there is a benefit to having old ears. ?

We also started with an early 2012 Leaf, then added a Tesla X in 2016 to have a cross-country vehicle, and became all-electric at that point.
I really liked the Leaf and it became my daily driver.
As to your concern about the charging network, you are experiencing CHAdeMo now (the Betamax of charging), not CCS. Superchargers are still the gold standard by far, but CCS is improving. On the other hand, there is little investment in adding or maintaining CHAdeMo stations.
I don't think you will regret bringing an R1S into your fleet. It will be quite the change from the Leaf, much like I experienced when replacing a 22 year old, oxidized, Plymouth mini-van for a Model X. It was nice having air bags, but I miss my cassette player.?

I originally ordered R1S. Switched to R1T to get it earlier. Now after seeing R1S in person, I feel R1T is better choice. Larger, more versatile, unless you absolutely need 6~7 seats.
