Best outcome- know what the problem was and fixed and no keeping truck for 2 weeks to see if it runs ok.

Love the idea that now the 12v system has effectively double the chance of failure, since it's basically inoperable with half the system down.

Why in the world would they build it this way I wonder, every other car just has the single 12V bus, why would there be two nonredundant systems?

This one boggles me too....what is the upside of this design?

Glad you were able to get it fixed, bummer that it ruined a vacation. Have been following this thread and figured it was a 12V battery since it seemed like one half of the car was non functioning. Really wonder why Rivian chose to go with 2x 12V battery with essentially a right and left brain function.

They should have worked in it harder and found a better solution.
Supposedly the newest vehicles only have a single battery but I haven't seen any proof of that yet. Rivian likely had to buy a lot of off the shelf stuff to get their first vehicles off the door and had more time to re-engineer solutions afterwards.

But how about finding a larger battery and a home for it. That location they chose is not great in the first place for probably the most maintenance intensive item in the truck. Ford did much better on Lightening for how they handled it.

Ford has a lot less extra hardware to worry about because they don't have electronically controllable suspension nor air compressors and it's a much larger vehicle up front.

All true....but access panels don't take up space. And a bus to parallel the batteries also doesn't take up space.

And just for record...air compressor is in back and electronically controlled suspension is a air spring that fits in the confines of the typically used space of a strut or coil spring. None of that resides in the space up front.

Just for the record, the shock towers aren't nearly as tall in the Lightning.

Is there any 'proof' to premise that Rivian redesigned the 12V system to use a single battery? Is the speculation that it's lithium? Would like to see a Munro kind of tear-down of the whole 12V system - ideally a before and after - if there really is a redesign.

I don't want to get in a pissing match. I feel the design could have been better and it appears you feel it is the best possible with all things considered. That is fine. Just sucks that when one battery randomly dies, that the whole truck dies where ever it maybe at moment. I feel that could be improved upon.
