So in Dec 2021 I configured an R1T and an R1S (both Adventure Series), then paid my $1,000 deposit for each, and waited patiently like everyone else. In Oct 2022 I received emails letting me know my R1T was being built and would soon be ready. I took delivery of it in mid-November 2022.
Fast forward to early 2023 and I'm anxious for the R1S based on my experience with the truck. Again, like everyone else, I receive the emails stating delivery estimates would be available on the portal. Much to my dismay when I log in, the estimate shows my R1S not being available until as late as June 2024. So I immediately jumped on the forum and scoured the posts looking for ways others had used to try to change their configuration and nudge things forward. I had a basic build with Adventure/Quad Motor/Large Pack/El Cap Granite/21" Road Wheels/Black Mountain & Ash. Meanwhile, my delivery estimate went away completely and was replaced with "Processing Estimate "
Heartbroken, I contacted my Rivian Guide (like everyone else did too), asking what if any I could do to maybe push the estimate closer to today. The guide wasn't much help in what specifically I could still change, but did recommend giving me access to the R1 Shop to hunt through the available vehicles to try and find one that I wanted.
After a few days, the link magically appeared at the top when I logged in, so each day I checked it several times looking for something. After awhile I could see some patterns develop in regards to the vehicles showing up. Like on a Monday there was 20+ R1S's that all had the All-Terrain Upgrade Package, then another day a batch of LA Silvers were the hot ticket, then a group of all Ocean Coast + Dark Ash Wood or a week of Forest Edge + Warm Ash Wood (none of which I wanted).
Low and behold on June 1st, my morning ritual of checking the available rigs landed me a gold mine of El Cap Granites - a couple with EXACTLY my reservation configuration. Wait what?? Exactly? How? I was never notified that there was a match to my exact model and my delivery estimate was still off in la la land. Why wouldn't Rivian notify reservation holders that there was an exact match available vs continuing to wait? It seemed bizarre and a loss if I just decided to cancel everything and move on to a different vehicle brand. When I ordered a Tesla S in Feb 2022, I was told it would be Dec/Jan 2023 before it would be built. But in June 2022, Tesla let me know that a vehicle matching my build was available now for immediate (2 week) delivery. It just seems like Rivian, for advanced as they are, hasn't rounded the corner on the technology behind the order game (or at least compared to Tesla).
Either way, I'm happy since I pick up my El Cap Granite R1S Adventure Series tomorrow! But for those in a similar situation, make sure you check the R1 Shop multiple times daily and don't necessarily give up on the configuration you want or wait for Rivian to let you know that what you want is actually available.
