My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Wondering if anyone else has had this happen. I’ve called Service to have them pull the logs, mostly out of curiousity, but also in the event there’s a real bug to chase down.

Car sat in garage overnight, unlocked. Key fob is out of range. I go into the car this morning with my phone, bluetooth ON, but Rivian app closed.

Car turns on as normal (press brake pedal, shift into D), and drives out of the garage as normal like it sees a key. I -always- shut the app off when I’m not using the truck, but double checked, and indeed - the app was definitely not open.

Fired up the Rivian app, showed normal ”In Use” screen, because I was indeed still in Drive but stopped in my driveway.

Anyone else seen something like this? I’ll report back on what the techs say about the data log.

The only oddity I can think of is that my phone updated last night to the newest version of IOS.

This is normal for me. I don't need the app to be open in the foreground in order to work as a key. I almost always close the app after I'm done using it to avoid battery drain on my phone, even though I rarely use the app anyway, and my PaaK works all the time.

So really, you drove off with PaaK, as expected.

So I've never set up PAAK. Several months ago did a home depot run and when I got there realized I had left my key fob home. I keep the key card in my wallet (RFID blocked) just in case. I believe the truck just drove without any type of key. I locked the truck from the app and used the key card to unlock and drive home but made me wonder. I recall another post with a similar comment. Luckily I live in an area where locking things isn't necessary (yes they still exist).

P.S. To car thieves, I love my R1T and will track you down and do bad things if you steel my truck!

your phone is a key. the app doesnt need to be open. it works via bluetooth. its normal. if your BT was off and it worked, then id be concerned.
Nope - the ca will not start without the app running (or in background). If the app is closed, car won’t start.

This is new behavior.

I’ve never been able to start the car without the app open. This is an anomaly for sure.

Weird, because that’s absolutely not the case for me. If the app is closed, the car won’t start, period. “Present a key” is the message I get on the dash if the app is closed.

To clarify for all - the app needs to be running, but not necessarily open. If it’s in background, that’s fine. But if it’s force-quit and not running in background, default behavior is to NOT allow the vehicle to move. This has been verified as the correct behavior per Rivian.

FYI service was stumped and wants to see the truck.

It's clearly not new based on the responses from other owners. When you "close" an app, they generally aren't really closed. Swiping it up doesn't close it. You'd have to force close the app specifically. And many apps can auto run at startup as well.

Set up PaaK on my old Pixel 3 XL the day I got my truck. Have never needed to open the app or do anything special. Walk up to truck, get in, drive. I believe I did set the app to stay running all the time (not optimize for battery saver, or whatever). After seeing all the threads on this forum, maybe I just got lucky, LOL. #shrug

Edit: as long as it has this notification, it's good. Obviously if I force-close the app and don't re-open it there would be problems. ? I've noticed it still works even if phone is down at 1% battery remaining. If the battery died completely, suppose I'd have to use the fob or keycard.

I can take a video, but I guarantee (in my case) that if I swipe the app up to force close in IOS, the car will absolutely not start.

Also, as a point of information, if you go into the key section in the truck it will highlight the key it used/detected to start.

That’s cool, I didn’t realize we could see that. Wish I could get into the logs.
