I installed SXM radio using the FM adapter. While not the best solution it does solve the off road problem most of the time. An AUX in or USB-c connector would be far superior but with Rivian’s move to subscription services I doubt it will ever happen. Money talks.

Here it is - the best looking, fastest, most reliable R1T Rivian has ever made - for the most grateful and happy owner yet! ...Creating my own thread seemed anticlimactic at this point:party:

I'm a Windows guy and I use Media Player (sometimes). I found out something that could be useful. I copied some plain mp3 files into music in internal storage on my Android phone. I used a file browser to find the file. When I clicked the file, it asked if I wanted to use Youtube to play the file, I answered yes. I pressed the phone icon on the Rivian's infotainment screen and the sound came out of the car's sound system, not the phone (at least I didn't hear the phone). The picture on the screen said "Not available", but I got sound anyway. You could lay the phone on the charger pad and play music indefinitely. I think if I had an app that would play mp3 files and create a playlist, like Windows Media Player does, I would be happy. Is there such an app? I haven't found one yet. It still isn't the same as having a media player built into the car, but it is free and you wouldn't loose signal in remote areas. I live in a rural area with few FM stations.

The Rivian sound system is ok but if it isn't Bose, then it's not great. Plain and simple. As far as USB vs Bluetooth, even the Amish don't use wires anymore. ? Never understand why anyone would want a separate USB device other than a 512g micro-SD card in their phone with cached music from Spotify, SiriusXM, and/or your own ripped music since you have it wherever you go including your vehicle or camping or whatever.
The fact that you think Bose and their 30 year old paper cone technology is "great" and superior to anything else, as well as the fact that you think a bluetooth connection sounds as good as a direct USB read file shows your ignorance of good sound.
The fact that I can't plug in a USB for my music is one of the largest factors of hesitating on the purchase when the Duals come out. Probably ridiculous to most, but it's that important to me.

The fact that you think a USB connection will make a significant difference coming through a mediocre at best Rivian sound system is comical.

That said, I'll put up my wife's Cayenne's 14 speaker Bose sound system vs ANY OTHER VEHICLE'S OEM sound system w/ or w/o USB.

To each their own, but I'm willing to bet that pluggable USB isn't in the top 100 decision criteria for anyone else buying a Rivian.

In regards to comments about using a bluetooth phone music source vs a USB stick- I have previously used a thrumb drive on my Tesla for 90%+ of my music and have now been using bluetooth from my phone in my R1S.

Where the phone, for me, is not as good are these points-

Interruption by phone notifications. I like having notifications on my phone for incoming emails, texts, etc. But when listening to music, the music volume is reduced which is good if you want those notifications...but I do not want them when enough when driving, to be worth the annoyance of my favorite music being interrupted. And yes I can turn off notifications while driving, but that requires me to make a change to my phone.

Having to start the music playing on my phone every time I start up the car. I have to start the app on the phone and select the music and hit play. When I exit the car, I have to stop the music or my phone, when bluetooth disconnects, starts playing the music from the phone's speakers. Yes, I can manually start and stop, but I would rather not. With a thumb drive (if the UI is well done), the music starts right where I last left off when I parked the car.

When using a thumb drive, I can arrange music into folders and then (assuming the car's interface is done well) play certain folders or certain artists or an album. In order to do this on my phone, I have to open the phone's app and navigate on the phone. Which I would rather not do while I am driving. On my way back from picking up my Rivian on delivery day... I almost rear ended a stopped car on the freeway because I was screwing around with the music settings on my phone. Sure, that is on me... I am an idiot (and thank you for Rivian's red warning and alarm for saving me)...but I would rather just navigate my music on the dash.

I am pretty sure, that playing songs by bluetooth in my Rivian, there is no track listing, just the current song. So I can't scroll on the screen or see what is coming up (unless I again open my phone). In a perfect world, the directory would show on my Rivian screen and I could even select which song to play).

I can fit a TON of music on a 1 tb thumb drive. I do keep some music on my phone, but I have a smaller set on the phone as my apps, video recordings, etc... take up a lot of room and my capacity is much more limited.

Now to be clear.... this is total first world problems right... just a minor thing that I hope they implement. My goal is to show why, for me, this is my preferred method. Now I am very old and lazy so if I am missing some tech hack or pro tip, let me know. :)

I'm pretty sure you'd lose that bet. Heck, it was probably even in my "top 100 decision criteria," but not high enough (on its own) to stop me from buying a Rivian - at this time, since there at few competitors in this space.

I have a 2023 MIT Model Y withe the premium sound and a 2023 R1S with the Rivian Elevation system. I also had a 2022 R1T with the Meridian system. First off, the Meridian system is good but the Rivian Elevation sounded just as good. The Tesla system is more immersive than the Rivian but unless you go back and forth between the two, a few minutes in the Elevation system and I was really happy with the sound.

Definitely agree that the Rivian audio is much less "immersive" feeling than the Tesla premium.

I've no Tesla for comparison, but which Surround mode are you using in the Rivian and how have you adjusted the F/R fade?

I read a post by astonian about adding a Roadtop Carplay unit. They mentioned getting power by plugging a 12V adapter into a port under the center dashboard air vents. Later I went back and saw that the post was over a year old. I looked for a 12V port and can't find one. The user manual showed the location of the port but said not all car models have it. Maybe it has been removed or moved. If there is a 12V power supply port in or under the dashboard, can somebody please tell me where it is.

It's been removed in all the newer builds I think.

I've used all the combinations. There are some minor differences. What have you found best?

The only button I dislike on this whole vehicle is the "music note". Picked up my R1S with Meridian system last weak. The walk through was not the best. It was fast and I did not notice a few issues. Delivery guy must have noticed issues and kept saying don't worry whatever you find create a ticket.

1-Radio did not work. Disconnected. Did a soft and hard reset along with a software update. No dice. I've read it might be a firmware issue with the components.

2-When iPhone is connected and playing a playlist from Apple Music, I can not select the individual songs in the list to play. I can only use the back/forward buttons on the steering wheel or the mini display where the album art is. Not a display issue as the display works fine in all other scenarios.

I can do without CarPlay as the maps and phone work well. The music apps are a hot mess! They should add Apple Car play and call it a day. They just can't get this coded right.
